It replaces the Centennial Quality Awards program as a means of encouraging excellence in providing a quality program at all levels of the BSA. Starting in January , a new quality program called Journey to Excellence JTE or sometimes J2E has become the new national performance assessment, communication, and recognition program for units, as well as for councils and districts. Many additional details are available on the BSA page. The award patch is displayed on the uniform's right sleeve below the patrol emblem or den numeral. Only the most recent year's patch is worn, not a string of past year patches. Since 11 promotes training of adult volunteers, there is an expectation that the adults know how to implement the patrol method, as well as how to accomplish the other requirements. Everyone who has a role in the unit that earned Scouting honors deserves to wear the JTE pin or patch. In some units, confusion persists about who wears the JTE patch in a qualifying unit. Journey to Excellence , often shortened to JTE, is a self-evaluation tool that lets unit leaders see, quantitatively, how well their unit is meeting the goals of Scouting. Think of it as a progress report. Members of those units that achieve gold, silver or bronze status are eligible to wear the JTE patch. There are specific criteria for the unit to plan and accomplish. Journey to Excellence is a number of performance measurements that are known to make for a successful Scouting program. It is designed as a planning tool. The Pack, Troop, Crew, Ship, or Post leadership reviews the performance measurements and makes plans to achieve as many objectives as possible. There are four major areas that Journey to Excellence focuses on, planning and budgeting, membership, program, and volunteer leadership. Each of the four major areas has specific and measurable objectives. These standards are reviewed each year and if needed, revised. Each objective has a point value and uses a balanced scorecard approach.

A crew may choose to design or purchase a Venturing t-shirt, polo, or any number of options. However, the recommended uniform for Venturers and adult advisors is the BSA-supplied green Venturing shirt and gray backpacking-style shorts or gray casual pants. If the crew chooses to wear the green Venturing shirts, the official Guide to Awards and Insignia must be followed.
