First of all I would like to state that I do know how toxic their relationship is, I do know that it is not healthy in any way. But what still makes them so loveable to me is that they are equals. That is why I am terribly against Joker and Harley. Also I honestly believe she cannot endure everything Joker throws at her physically and mentally. In my opinion Joker needs someone he can relate to, someone who balances him out, someone who can painfully take everything he does physically and psychologically and still fight back. That is nobody else than Batman. According to Joker Batman is the only one worthy of his intelligence. People who read most of the Joker comics do admit that the person Joker loves most aside from himself is Batman. Most people would say he does not need Joker at all and that he totally hates him. I think this is the therapy for him and that is also why he finds joy in beating up criminals. Joker is obviously the best candidat for this because he taunts Batman all the time and more or less likes it when he beats him up. Joker is like the messed up therapy partner for Batman. But seriously, both of them respect the other in most of their incarnations. Of course he does not need Joker to exist but there are several occasions where he shows not just compassion and guilt towards him but even feelings that might suggest he does love Joker deep down.
