Jim Carrey : I learned that you can fail at what you don't love, so you might as well do what you love. Jim Carrey : Where did this character come from? What is the dirt that the pearl is built around? And the pearl is the personality that you build around yourself as a protection against that thought: "If they ever find out that I'm worthless, if they ever find out that I'm not enough, I'll be destroyed". Jim Carrey : At some point when you create yourself to make it, you're going to have to either let that creation go and take a chance on being loved or hated for who you really are, or you're going to have to kill who you really are and fall into your grave grasping a character you never were. Jim Carrey : Yes? Jim Carrey : Hm

In a camera crew trailed Jim Carrey as he method-acted his way into the mind of Andy Kaufmann. The result is insightful, inane and wildly entertaining. During the filming of Man on the Moon , director Milos Forman had a phone call with his star, Jim Carrey, to complain about two unwanted people who kept appearing on set. The two nuisances were Andy Kaufman, long dead, and Tony Clifton, who never existed. Carrey, who claimed to not be there himself, was portraying them both in the biopic of Kaufman. Carrey had a documentary crew follow him around during the production, and their footage has been sitting on a shelf for nearly 20 years. For a start, we get Carrey, today, speaking to us via interrotron and looking a lot like late-period Jim Morrison. Unless he just wants us to think that…. The material of him on set is unbelievable. Gaze on with wonder as this pompous and very talented clown refuses to answer to the name Jim.

It was released on November 17, , through the streaming service Netflix. The film alternates between contemporary interviews with Carrey and firsthand footage of the making of Man on the Moon almost 20 years earlier. According to Carrey, Universal Pictures had withheld the behind-the-scenes footage much of it originally shot by Kaufman's former girlfriend, Lynne Margulies "so that people wouldn't think [he] was an asshole". The basic premise is that while making the film, Carrey is so committed to the role that, like Andy, he had difficulty separating himself from the character. Carrey's performance becomes so real that people who had known Andy, even family and others close to him, felt like they had him with them again. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September In The Guardian ' s review, the film was awarded 4 out of 5 stars.

I've always admired the way that he could contort his body in ways that you could almost say that he's a real life cartoon. This isn't real. Watch Official Trailer. You go to the office and you put a monkey suit on, and you act a certain way, say a certain thing, and lie through your teeth at times, and you do whatever you need to do to look like a winner, you know. Just the footage of him inviting everyone to join him for milk and cookies after his Carnegie Hall performance makes me weep openly. Who is Jim Carrey , really? We're the universe, man. I'd like to start by saying that I find the concept of the movie rather intriguing. Young are especially vulnerable for desiring to prove themselves and seeing no difference between offering a part of themselves with the whole; Carrey being all these things plus 90s prosperity A-list power, ripped a hole so large in his psyche he became a mountain man guru. I reckon he was a different kind of clown. Jim and Andy: The Great Beyond — Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton is a Netflix released Spike Jonze backed documentary that draws Carrey out of what seems like some type of long standing hiatus to talk about his experiences making Man on the Moon, whilst unearthing previously unseen behind the scenes footage of Milos Forman's production in which Carrey refused to be recognised as himself, rather going to the most extreme pinnacle's of method acting and living his days out as if he were in fact Kaufman returned to life. On top of all his other talents, Carrey is one thoughtful, profound guy.
