Wow - Thankfully a few years back someone suggested I read Manhattan Beach. She was a free spirit like her sister Faith, but it was in her head rather than in her heart. Jennifer Egan specialises in stories about how people run off the rails, and how sometimes they manage to save themselves. A beautifully written story of a young woman's journey to uncover heartbreaking family secrets and self discovery. In those student years she did a lot of traveling, often with a backpack: China, the former USSR, Japan, much of Europe, and those travels became the basis for her first novel, The Invisible Circus, and her story collection, Emerald City. Some might say you can't be truly free without completely letting go, without risking life and limb and even other lives, but I admired Phoebe for still keeping her wits without forsaking her calling. Her journey through Europe pulled at my memories of my own travels there, but sadly I just couldn't picture it as vividly as I should have. Retour en haut. Somehow, the magic the movie captured was lost in this novel. I was a child during the "hippy era" but do remember hearing on the news about the radical groups. But Phoebe is less damaged than Faith, and more resilient: her insistence on learning the truth about Faith's life and death is in essence a quest for a health and wholeness that cannot be found by any other route.
