Prince Jaehaerys Targaryen is a prince of the Targaryen dynasty. Jaehaerys is playing with his sister as their mother is doing her needlework. The Greens orchestrate a successful coup to set aside Viserys's chosen heir, Jaehaerys's half-aunt Rhaenyra , in favor of Prince Aegon. Jaehaerys thereby becomes heir to the Iron Throne, having previously been eighth in the line of succession. For simplicity, only the direct ancestors of future generations are on this family tree and they are not in the exact order of birth.

According to a semi-canon source, Jaehaerys looked wise and dignified even into his later years, with a long white flowing beard. Jaehaerys was more of a scholar than a warrior; his crown was a simple gold band with seven different colored stones inset. Jaehaerys was a gifted horse rider, a decent warrior, and above all else wise beyond his years. He was decisive both in thought and deed, always seeking the most peaceable ends. During the Faith Militant uprising, when Aenys thought King's Landing too unsafe, he fled to Dragonstone with his wife and all his children except for his eldest two, Aegon and Rhaena, who were in the Westerlands at this time. Dragonstone was held by Visenya Targaryen, whose counsel was for Aenys to bring "fire and blood" to the Faith of the Seven. Aenys, never the most robust, fell seriously ill. The Dowager Queen Visenya took over his care and Aenys briefly improved. Aenys then suffered a collapse when he learned Aegon and Rhaena were besieged at Crakehall, and soon died. Upon his death, Visenya mounted her dragon and flew to Pentos to retrieve her son Maegor. Visenya kept Jaehaerys, his mother, and sister hostage on Dragonstone for two years while Maegor fought the Faith Militant and Prince Aegon. Maegor kept Jaehaerys's older brother Viserys with him as a squire and hostage to ensure Alyssa's good behavior.

Maegelle joined the Faith and became a jaehaerys targaryen. House of the Dragon. She was actively involved in court affairs and became one of Jaehaerys's chief counselors, if not practical co-ruler.

The longest-reigning king in the history of the Seven Kingdoms , he is known for building the Kingsroad and reconciling with the Faith after the Faith Militant uprising. He was a dragonrider who rode the bronze dragon Vermithor. Jaehaerys I was the fourth king of the Targaryen dynasty, and reigned two centuries before the War of the Five Kings. Aenys died at the beginning of the Faith Militant uprising , after which the throne was usurped by his half-brother Maegor the Cruel , ahead of Aenys's own children. Shortly after, queen consort Rhaena Maegor's wife and Jaehaerys's older sister joined Jaehaerys's cause with her dragon Dreamfyre. Houses Lannister , Tyrell , Arryn , and Velaryon soon followed. Maegor was found dead on the Iron Throne a short time later.

Maegor usurped the crown and personally killed Aegon, while he, his mother Alyssa Velaryon and Alysanne were prisoners in Dragonstone, but managed to escape once his great-aunt Visenya passed away. The escape tragically provoked Maegor to torture to death Viserys, Jaehaerys other brother, but his mother nonetheless rallied several lords in order to support his claim. Jaehaerys I took the throne in 48 AC upon the death of his uncle, and his mother was his Regent for two years. Whilst Maegor the Cruel had brutally suppressed the Faith of the Seven during the uprising, Jaehaerys adopted a path of negotiation, his friendship with Septon Barth helping him understand the Faith. In return for the Faith's surrender and the disbanding of its militant orders, the Warrior's Sons and Poor Fellows , the Faith would suffer no further oppression and the Targaryens would return to being their staunch supporters.
