Swapped out my first pickguard Gibson J
By jjrpilot March 13, in Gibson Acoustic. I love this guitar but I'm not a fan of the how thick "flubber" the pickguard is. Do you all have any suggestions for a tortoise shell like, THIN pickguard that I could replace it with? That shouldn't be a difficult guard to get. I think I'm having him make a period correct one for my old Guild M I like the way he bevels and polishes his, and though not too thick, I dislike the paper thin ones typical of replacement guards. Another vote for Taylor Mullins.

By Wilco January 8, in Gibson Acoustic. I have a J that I purchased brand new, and would like to change the pickguard. There are a few reasons for this: 1. It's not installed in the proper position, in my opinion. It covers the entire side of the rosette. I feel that it's a bit too small for my liking anyway, and would like to replace it with the 50s style "batwing" guard. The batwing looks cool as hell. First off, would this void the warranty if I did it myself? Secondly, I've read and seen a number of ways to remove a pickguard — some people apply heat and pry it off with a thin palette blade. I've also read about soaking uncoated dental floss in naphtha lighter fluid , and working it underneath the pickguard.

If there is one complaint, it is that the geniuses at Gibson didn't allow the nitro finish to dry appropriately before installing the original pick guard, so now I'm left with some impressions in the finish where the previous pick guard was. And not the flubber crap one.
Late s model: B-. General Comments: Initially, the Gibson J45 guitar differed only slightly from the discontinued J Internal contruction changes from the J included top bracing strenghtened slightly with 1" set "X" brace behind the soundhole, tall and thin back braces, and most importantly, scalloped tall and thin top braces.
