After the events of The Avengers , Tony suffers from post traumatic stress disorder after the Battle of New York as he realized that there are bigger threats out there and he must protect Pepper, people and everyone he loves from being killed. However, he resists the trauma when the leader of the Ten Rings, the Mandarin, tries to kill him. Now stranded without any of his technology Stark must find a way to come back home and stop the Mandarin from destroying America. It was released on May 3, Despite receiving mixed reviews from film critics, the film was positively welcomed from audience despite some criticizing for its twist. The movie is the highest grossed movie of Despite rumors, it is unknown if the film will be made. The series will center on Tony Stark, momentarily became an holographical AI after saving his consciousness in a computer while phsycally dying, becomes the mentor of a teenager named Riri Williams and wants her to be his successor. In the film, Tony Stark grapples with the consequences of the events of The Avengers during a national terrorism campaign on the United States led by the mysterious Mandarin. After the release of Iron Man 2 in May , director Favreau chose not to return for a third film. Black was hired to write and direct the sequel in February , working with Pearce to make the script more character-centric, focus on thriller elements, and use concepts from Warren Ellis 's " Extremis " comic book story arc. The MCU may currently be on to newer and more multiversal pastures, but for the first decade of its existence, Iron Man was the lynchpin of the whole enterprise. Not only did the Armored Avenger kickstart the entire franchise with his first solo film in , but he remained one of its key characters all the way from his origin story to his final sacrifice at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Nowadays, MCU movies and TV shows paying off storylines and character beats from multiple franchises simultaneously is common, but back in , Iron Man 3 was one of the first ever examples of a movie having to act as a sequel to two films simultaneously. Part of the reason for this is Iron Man 2 is a very scattered film. In both threads, Iron Man 2 gives Tony an easy way out, which makes the final film largely immaterial to his character development. Shane Black , who made his bones writing " Lethal Weapon ," " The Last Boy Scout " and other crash-and-burn action films, was the perfect person to take on "Iron Man 3," and not just because he worked with the franchise's star Robert Downey Jr. One minute it seems to care a great deal about what's happening, the next it's sneering at the notion that anyone could care about anything that happens in a movie. For a franchise on the brink of fatigue, this attitude seems just about right — especially considering that all of the Iron Man movies are more self-aware comedies than dramas, with overlapping, often improvised-sounding dialogue and winks at the audience which suggest that the filmmakers are fans of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby's affable Road series. This is the kind of film in which the hero can swear revenge against the villain for injuring his friend, then a few scenes later earn big laughs from the sight of Tony Stark in Iron Man regalia tottering down narrow stone steps like a drunk drag queen in nosebleed heels.
