By Guy Walters. At first glance, they appear to be the sort of pictures that grace any family album — but look a little closer. Two of the faces are very familiar — and they usually bear scowls rather than smiles. They belong to none other images of the kray twins two of Britain's most feared gangsters: Ronnie and Reggie Kray.

The first image of actor Tom Hardy as the infamous Krays has been released as filming gets under way on a new movie about the notorious London gangsters. The year-old is taking on both roles as twins Ronnie and Reggie in Legend, which follows the rise and fall of the brothers in the s and s. In April, when Hardy was confirmed in the roles, he said: "I've got to work out how to play both twins, which will be fun. I'm not going to put too much pressure on myself, I just want to have some fun and see what's out there and explore with the work. Ronnie and Reggie Kray were infamous for their involvement running organised crime rackets in London's East End and were both jailed for life in for the murders of fellow gangsters George Cornell and Jack 'The Hat' McVitie.

Ronald Ronnie Kray 24 October — 17 March and Reginald Reggie Kray 24 October — 1 October were English organised crime figures, and identical twin brothers from Haggerston , who operated mostly in the East End of London from the late s until their arrest in With their gang, known as the Firm which was based in Bethnal Green , the Kray twins were involved in murder , armed robbery , arson , protection rackets , gambling and assaults. At their peak in the s, they gained a certain measure of celebrity status by mixing with prominent members of London society, being photographed by David Bailey and interviewed on television. The Krays were arrested on 8 May and convicted in as a result of the efforts of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Leonard "Nipper" Read. Each was sentenced to life imprisonment. Ronnie, upon being certified insane, was committed to Broadmoor Hospital in and remained there until his death on 17 March from a heart attack ; Reggie was released from prison on compassionate grounds in August , five weeks before he died of bladder cancer. The Krays were thorough Eastenders — Charles from Shoreditch and Violet from Bethnal Green — and were apparently of mixed Irish , Austrian Jewish and Romanichal descent, [5] [6] [7] although this has been disputed. The Kray household was dominated by their mother, who remained the brothers' most important influence during their childhood. Kray was regarded as a minor celebrity in Bethnal Green for giving birth to and raising a healthy pair of twins at a time when the child mortality rate was high among the British working class.
