Forsman has expanded the first edition, which sold out quickly in the wake of the success of the Netflix adaptation of his graphic novel The End of the Fxxxing World , to include over 20 new pages as well as a new cover. Sydney seems like a normal year-old freshman. Forsman expertly channels teenage ethos and ennui in a style that evokes classic comic strips while telling a powerful story about the intense, and sometimes violent, tug of war between trauma and control. This rocky journey is as insightful as it is brutal. It may be the only way to wind up a story that lurches so unpredictably from the ordinary to the ominous. I fully recommend the show but the book is a little less good.
That said, judging by the reviews I read on Goodreads a lot of people who like the TV series really hate the book. The book stars Sydney, a very depressed teenager who happens to have some weird mind control powers. The teenage dream. The book follows Sydney as she navigates a less than ideal puberty. She experiments with drugs and sex and generally attempts to fill the void she is feeling. Her coping mechanisms are unhealthy but not unrealistic.

Darius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He's about to take his first-ever trip to Iran, and it's pretty overwhelming—especially when he's also dealing with clinical depression, a disapproving dad, and a chronically anemic social life. In Iran, he gets to know his ailing but still formidable grandfather, his loving grandmother, and the rest of his mom's family for the first time. And he meets Sohrab, the boy next door who changes everything.

She's skinny but not 'hot-skinny', she's dealing with the death of her father in silence, and her best friend who Syd is really in love with is dating a homophobic bully. Syd's guidance counselor gives her a diary in which to vent her frustration, but Syd has another outlet for her anger, one which threatens to overwhelm her entirely. From acclaimed cartoonist Charles Forsman, I Am Not Okay With This expertly channels teenage ennui while telling a powerful story about the intense and sometimes violent tug of war between trauma and control. Definitely did not expect that ending but can't say I did not see it coming! Intense man. I enjoyed the narrative and depicted struggle of main character. That was intense. Read it in one sitting after finishing the show on Netflix. They're definitely different enough that I could enjoy and be surprised by both.

I have not seen the Netflix series, I therefore have no opinion on it or whether it's better or worse than the book. But Syd is extraordinary in one way: she gots the telekinesis! Chuck Forsman returns to what he does best: teenage angst. And turns out, I liked the show much more. Is he throwing the sex in there for the wrong reasons? Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. I'm a teacher and want to be a little protective of the Sydneys I teach, even if they don't want me to reach them. Shipping calculated at checkout. None of them are really likable, but they seem normal. I don't recommend it. Like Dad, Syd self-medicates with pot. This is the valid complaint in my opinion.
Angsty Syd navigates high school awkwardness, family drama and an unrequited crush on her best friend while trying to rein in her budding superpowers.
Nor does Forsman do anything with all the side characters he includes in here. PillPack Pharmacy Simplified. I initially was going to give this book 4 stars but felt the need to bump it 5, mostly out of spite. I loved Sydney. I fall on the pretty darn left side of the political spectrum but complaints about this book are why moderates and conservatives hate libs. Sydney in I am not okay with this. I especially like how inarticulate Syd and almost all of the people in the story really are. Amazon Payment Products. Its uncomfortable and a little graphic. Downgrading to two stars.
