Owner Bill Miller wanted a perfect Hudson and, having seen examples of restorer Tom Zitkus's work before, knew that he's one of a handful of painters who could help Bill achieve that lofty goal. And he did. If ever there's a phase of a restoration project that you can't rush, it's the final finishing of the body. Achieving paint perfection requires lots and lots of patience: It's a slow process that requires an ultra-clean working environment, as well as the proper air temperature and ideal humidity levels to ensure a problem-free application. Sanding, sanding and more sanding is what makes the final finish orange-peel-free and as smooth as glass. But it's not enough to tend to the exterior panels alone. If you're after a beautiful, concours-level paint finish throughout the car, then you must also tackle the laborious task of wet-sanding the rocker panels, door sills, door jambs, dashboard, the underside of the hood and trunklid and even the remotest part of the valance panels. So hopefully this installment will shed some light on just what's involved in creating a perfect finish.
