Allotropes Some elements exist in several different structural forms, called allotropes. Each allotrope has different physical properties. For more information on the Visual Elements image see the Uses and properties section below. Group A vertical column in the periodic table. Members of a group typically have similar properties and electron configurations in their outer shell. Period A horizontal row in the periodic table. The atomic number of each element increases by one, reading from left to right. Block Elements are organised into blocks by the orbital type in which the outer electrons are found. These blocks are named for the characteristic spectra they produce: sharp s , principal p , diffuse d , and fundamental f. Atomic number The number of protons in an atom. Electron configuration The arrangements of electrons above the last closed shell noble gas. Melting point The temperature at which the solid—liquid phase change occurs.
Bulk modulus A measure of how difficult it is to compress a substance. Other applications of niobium include welding, nuclear industries, electronics, optics, numismaticsand jewelry. Atomic mass.
This is a list of chemical elements and their atomic properties, ordered by Atomic number. Since valence electrons are not clearly defined for the d-block and f-block elements, there not being a clear point at which further ionisation becomes unprofitable, a purely formal definition as number of electrons in the outermost shell has been used. Niobium pronounced as ni-OH-bee-um belongs to the family of transition metals, denoted by the chemical symbol Nb. Defined as a soft and ductile metal with eighteen isotopes, it is available in the form of foil, sheet, tube, rod, and powder. When exposed to air oxygen at room temperature, it develops a bluish tint [1, 2, 11]. The metal is found associated with carbonatites in pyrochlore while its ore deposits have been discovered in the mining regions of Brazil, Canada, Russia, Zaire, and Nigeria who are also its major producers [11]. It is named after Niobe, the daughter of King Tantalus in Greek mythology, who was turned into a stone while crying after the murder of his fourteen children [1]. Its actual year of discovery goes back to when John Winthrop, the first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony and an avid mineral collector, found a new mineral that was sent to the British Museum and named it columbite. A new twist in the discovery of niobium took place in when the English chemist and physicist William Hyde Wollaston compared the mineral with another mineral called tantalite and announced that columbium was actually the element tantalum.

Notice that protons go in the nucleus of the atom and electrons are drawn on orbits surrounding the nucleus. Image from Wikimedia commons. We can assume that if the atom is neutrally charged it would also contain 11e-. The energy shells filled up from the lowest energy to highest until all 11e- were accounted for. Having introduced the basics of atomic structure and quantum mechanics, we can use our understanding of quantum numbers to determine how atomic orbitals relate to one another. This allows us to determine which orbitals are occupied by electrons in each atom.

Annalen der Physik in German. American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal. This was chosen because of niobium's chemical similarity to tantalum. Niobium oxide compounds are added to glass to increase the refractive index, which allows corrective glasses to be made with thinner lenses. Electron affinity The energy released when an electron is added to the neutral atom and a negative ion is formed. Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Edward Arnold Press. The metal takes on a bluish tinge when exposed to air at room temperature for extended periods. Archived from the original on 10 December It is also involved in some highly temperature-stable superalloys used for engine parts in the aerospace industry. Subsequently, there was considerable confusion [13] over the difference between columbium niobium and the closely related tantalum. The electrolysis of a molten mixture of K 2 [ NbOF 5 ] and sodium chloride is one; the other is the reduction of the fluoride with sodium.
