Some folks have it permanently marked on their skin or wear the symbol on jewellery, and a number of the previous polyamory flags have it as a significant part of their imagery. But where did it come from? And it is actually a symbol for polyamory? As you can see in the infographic below, both the heart symbol and the infinity symbol have quite the heritage: the heart was originally a stylised depiction of a leaf, and not associated with love until the 13th century. The infinity symbol grew out of another mathematical symbol known as the lemniscate, and eventually grew to represent not only mathematical infinity but also philosophical eternity.

Sometimes, though, the heart and lemniscate are combined or intertwined. Like this…. The infinity heart, a much used symbol of polyamory. The design is popular with folk who are most definitely monogamous too. They see it as a means of showing affection for one other person only. A declaration of fidelity and of love that will last an eternity. In a polyamorous relationship, though, the heart and lemniscate take on a different meaning. That type of openness is probably how many people think that polyamory operates. An excuse for the participants to indulge in free love or be promiscuous. The way Raith designed the tattoos, you can see that the infinity sign cuts the heart in four places only. Even the colours are meaningful in poly-speak. The heart is usually shown in red, to represent love and passion, and the lemniscate in blue, for openness and honesty. Life on Earth is full of limits, but infinity is the idea that some things are without limits. It might also awaken your curiosity about the mysteries beyond the boundaries of your usual experiences. On a PC, you hold down the Alt key and then type on the numeric keypad. Alternately, you can copy and paste an infinity symbol from a website or document that has one. The infinity symbol simply means there is no limit. Outside a mathematical context, the infinity symbol can be used to represent spiritual or emotional longings for something that will last forever or not be subject to other earthly limits.
