The Harvard Classics , originally marketed as Dr. Eliot's Five-Foot Shelf of Books , is a volume series of classic works of world literature, important speeches, and historical documents compiled and edited by Harvard University President Charles W. Buyers of these sets were apparently attracted to Eliot's claims. The General Index contains upwards of 76, subject references. The Five-Foot Shelf, with its introductions, notes, harvard classics, guides to harvard classics, and exhaustive indexes, may claim to constitute a reading course unparalleled in comprehensiveness and authority. The set was the focus of a set of materials for adult education with syllabi, instructions for study, and classroom discussions points.
This program emphasizes a wide range of knowledge and skills within its seven doctoral tracks: ancient history, Byzantine Greek, classical archaeology, classical philology, classical philosophy, Medieval Latin, and modern Greek. Under the guidance of our renowned faculty, you will take an innovative approach to the study of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds from a variety of fields and methodological perspectives. Classics as an intellectual discipline embraces the study of ancient Greece and Rome, two civilizations whose legacy has played a major role in shaping our modern world. The concentration in Classics is inter-disciplinary, combining the study of language, linguistics, and literature; archaeology, art, and architecture; history; philosophy, science, and medicine; and myth and religion. To study Classics at Harvard, no prior knowledge of an ancient language is required. The Department of the Classics has been at the forefront of graduate education in Classics for well over a century.
