Introducing a new enemy faction is always difficult, but the Promethean Knights have remained confusing to many players, and as the Master Chief Collection becomes more and more popular , confusion around the Prometheans remains high. On two known occasions, the Didact used the Composer to digitize helpless humans to transform them into Knights: once during the Flood War, and once during the events of Halo 4. Fireteam Majestic make reference to this, and wonder whether the digitised humans could be saved, yet have no issue with fighting their AI forms. However, in other lore, Promethean Knights make the most powerful Covenant look weak, and each Knight has its own autonomy when not serving the Didact or Cortana.

The mechanical Prometheans are war machines created by the Ur-Didact after his descent into madness near the end of the Forerunner-Flood war. The Didact viewed these constructs as a novel and effective strategy to fight the Flood without risk of biological infection. They encompass various classes of leader units known as Knights , specialized Sentinels known as Watchers , and small, pack-oriented Crawlers designed to overwhelm the enemy from different directions. These Prometheans were first encountered by UNSC forces and Jul 'Mdama's Covenant faction on Requiem in July ; the constructs encountered on the shield world are sometimes exclusively referred to as the Prometheans of Requiem. The AI of each Promethean Knight is based on the neural pattern, or essence, of an individual organic being, extracted and converted into machine data by the Composer.
Following the Human-Forerunner war and the discovery of the Floodhalo promethean, the Prometheans, under the leadership of the Didact, stood in opposition to the radical faction of Builders led by Master Builder Slots synonym, who proposed the construction of the Halo Array. He rounded up groups of humans meant to be indexed in preparation for the activation of the Halo Array, gaining at the same time increased numbers for his army and a measure of retribution for humanity's actions during the Human-Forerunner war. A group of Forerunners however, noticed and, because of their belief in the Mantle of Responsibility , imprisoned the Ur-Didact and shut down the project. Becoming AIs, they gained a rampant-like quality, becoming just like Sentinels to serve under the Ur-Didact. This act would bring the Knights back under the Didact's command. Once the Didact retrieved the Composer, he immediately went to Earth to compose the Human race. John boarded the ship and defend the where Knights were waiting. However, John didn't stop the Composer's activation in time and the entire city of New Phoenix was lost.
