Green Street Hooligans. By Eric Goldman. Filled with pent up anger and frustration, Matt finds an outlet for his repressed feelings when he meets Pete, played by Charlie Hunnam. A true football that's soccer for us Americans fanatic, Pete introduces Matt to the members of his so-called "firm," a group of fellow West Ham United supporters, whose organization and tendency to get in dangerous fights with rival teams' firms often evokes the feeling of a gang. Soon, Matt finds himself a full-fledged member of the firm, and goes from being scared of the constant violence they find themselves immersed in, to embracing it and finding true thrills from it. Wood, who for the most part normally plays fairly innocent and good-natured characters, revealed what drew him to this role. One was that I didn't know a lot about hooligan culture. I've seen it countless times now, though I'm not sure I've ever seen it in its entirety at one sitting — it tends to be 30 minutes here, 45 there, an hour somewhere else. But between all those partial sittings, I've managed several complete run-throughs. It's not that I'm a fan of the football hooligan genre — I've dabbled in one or two others and found them unwatchable, and have never read any of many and varied books about exploits on the InterCity trains — but there's a compelling awfulness about Green Street. Now, I'm afraid I need to give you some spoilers here. Well, a lot of spoilers.

Pete Dunham : Fuck it, I will take you with me. You might learn something Matt Buckner : About soccer? Pete Dunham : No mate. Matt Buckner : I've never lived closer to danger, but I've never felt safer. I've never felt more confident, and people could spot it from a mile away. And as for this, the violence? I gotta be honest - it grew on me. Once you've taken a few punches and realize you're not made of glass, you don't feel alive unless you're pushing yourself as far as you can go.
