Sophie Payten needed a break.
Sophie Payten — the folk-pop singer and producer known as Gordi — compiled the playlist 'Music for Gordi began her latest album Our Two Skins at a point in her life where everything was ending. Finishing up a long-term relationship and coming to terms with a new truth in her identity — which played out against the backdrop of the same-sex marriage vote in Australia — led to an isolated internal state, further fuelled by distance, trying communication and lost loved ones. This playlist is a reminder to take the time to rewind and recentre to allow yourself a journey of self-discovery — or rediscovery, as Gordi has done with her latest record. I stumbled across their music a few years ago and fell in love with the way the sounds are processed and so textured. I love the title of this song, too. W hen I was a year old, I would sit in the backseat of this little tricycle that my older brother would ride around the paved patio. The tricycle was blue and yellow and had a number plate, and the joyride was enough to keep me entertained for some solid minutes. Whether this memory is a memory or not, it fills me up like other fond recollections do — it expands in the same way, covering me. Bundling heavy emotional baggage into an atmospheric lullaby, the album opener is the sound of Gordi trying to get her shit together. Jetting her way to Europe, she had nothing but time to confront the intensity of everything that had happened since her debut album Reservoir. It was an absolute cauldron of excitement, but also despair and confusion. They said to me they were keen to make a record with me when the time came. It was a real family affair. Being back in the town she was raised and put on the musical map had a huge difference to Our Two Skins. That goes down to the soundscapes that ornament each track, which were constructed from the rustic environment. You can hear the clanging and revving of found tools, the baas of sheep pitched down and disguised, the hollow reverb of kitchen floor lino; all of it augmenting the evocative atmosphere. And like that album opener, these are reflective songs that wrestle with complex matters of the heart, often in quiet moments that pack a powerful emotional punch. One of the last songs written for the album, the guitar-driven lead single was inspired by the Payten family matriarch who prompted Gordi returning home to Canowindra to make Our Two Skins in the first place.
