Gen five starters

The trio that started it all. As a kid, many of us agonized over which starter to take with us on our first adventure through the Kanto region.

All of the Starters are the three basic types, Grass , Water , and Fire , 2 Starters have dual-typings right off the bat, Rowlet and Bulbasaur. Pikachu is the only Starter that has a pre-evolution and to be an Electric Type , Pikachu doesn't like going into a Pokeball so it was also the first Pokemon to be presented out of its Pokeball. The Alola Region doesn't really have any Starters because it doesn't have a Professor to present new Trainers with new Pokemon, it has a Principal. Ash catches Rowlet first then later on he catches Litten and Lana catches Popplio so really there are no real Starters in Alola. Pikachu at first was a really aggressive Pokemon until Pikachu protected Ash against Spearow. Ash catches Charmander after he saves it from the rain when it's Trainer abandons it on a rock telling it he would come back for it.

But let's face it, not all starters are created equal, and nothing demonstrates that unfortunate truth more then the Kanto trio. Real talk, it's why I thought Grass types were weak to Psychic until the third generation. Normally, middle evolutions of starters are not note worthy. Always overshadowed by the two forms it's in between. However, there are precisely three exceptions, and Ivysaur is one of them. And it's all because of Smash Bros. In Smash Bros. This meant that Ivysaur was the choice for the one that's average, despite Bulbasaur and Venusaur being far more popular.

Squirtle and Wartortle are fine, but Blastoise is a crap design. He always delivers an electrifying performance and shocks opponents far and wide. This combination of awful movepool, and a region that is hostile to it, cements the Chikorita line as the least popular Gen 2 starter by far. It does get Sleep Powder, but that doesn't save it. Despite being weak against all three of Roark's Pokemon in the Oreburgh City gym, Chimchar is arguably still the best starter Pokemon in gen 4. Real talk, it's why I thought Grass types were weak to Psychic until the third generation. Froakie's final form, Greninja, is probably the better of the three third-stage evolutions and will crush the Elite Four. Oh right, yeah. That kind of type coverage is extremely rare in the Game Boy games, and you need Surf anyway, so it can't hurt.

These guys are the starters who started it all! Squirtle, on the other hand, is a strong contender in early gym battles but struggles in the Vermillion and Celadon City gyms. Charmander is by far the most popular choice, but Charmander also faces tough challenges in the first two gym battles.

I burned my way through everything. Many fans tended to gravitate towards Totodile or Cyndaquil due to their final evolutions, but each starter is well-liked by a majority of the community. Most of Feraligatr's best moves have secondary effects, so it uses this to great effect! Weaknesses be damned. This would be let down by it's natural movepool, which only has Flamethrower as a viable attack. It is a popular choice among Pokemon trainers who prefer Fire-type Pokemon for battles. We may have given the title to Snivy, had Contrary been around in the Black and White days, but as it is, Tepig wins out in this particular battle. It was a trade and trade back arrangement like most, just to fill the dex. Gen 3 would thankfully fix that. It stops following you though, and loses all the perks that particular Pikachu gets.
