Kickstarter can be a great way for content creators and aspiring video game developers to attain funding. Making a video game is certainly not a cheap endeavor, and those without the necessary funds—say, indie companies or individual content creators, for example—are typically forced to utilize Kickstarter or similar crowdfunding outlets. For the uninitiated, Kickstarter is a service that sees everyday people co-financing a project through a wide variety of denominations in exchange for exclusive bonuses, typically in the form of early access to the game, the chance to play a beta version, and so on. Some of these work out splendidly and prove a harmonious working relationship, but most others, it seems, are disasters. The story behind Yogventures is more tragic than it is funny. The creators behind popular YouTube gaming channel Yogcast, which became popular through its Minecraft videos, decided to create a Minecraft clone of their own called Yogventures. To create the game, they hired first-time developers Winterkewl Games. Unfortunately, Winterkewl were too inept and inexperienced, and the project quickly spiraled into failure. The work was deemed unsatisfactory, and Yogventures was eventually canceled, losing its backers half a million dollars. The story behind Unwritten: That Which Happened is another tragic one.

But competition is increasing in the tabletop crowdfunding space, and Kickstarter is doing itself no favors with its very public and very confusing transition to the blockchain. Polygon spoke with the Brooklyn-based technology company about its results and the year ahead. Not just industry-wise, but are we going to have a Gen Con? Are we going to have a PAX [Unplugged]? Are we going to have an Origins [Game Fair]? And what are those going to look like? Pre-pandemic, these in-person events formed major waypoints on the tabletop crowdfunding calendar. Combs attributed those gains in tabletop, once again, to the pandemic itself which kept folks cooped up at home searching for escapism in the form of more personal connections with family and friends.

Because it has already been 23 years since the release of the iconic System Shock 2, fans are eagerly anticipating the upcoming reboot entry, System Shock. Developed by Nightdive Studios, this re-imagining of the first game is just one of many games that have been funded by Kickstarter campaigns. Since the launch of Kickstarter 13 years ago, many developers have turned to the crowdfunding site to help turn their ideas into reality. While some of these games never received enough money, didn't meet expectations, or simply never released, there are also some titles, like Undertale , that became absolute success stories. Set within a universe where magic is real, mythical creatures exist, and mega-corporations control the world, the game follows a customized player character who travels to Hong Kong to meet with their adopted father, Raymond Black, and their adopted brother, Duncan, after being in prison. One of the pioneering games to use crowdfunding is the real-time strategy roguelike FTL: Faster Than Light, which has the player control a spaceship from the Galactic Federation. After obtaining important information about the Rebellion that has been fighting against the Federation, the player must guide their customized ship and crew across the randomly generated galaxy so that they can reach the Federation headquarters while avoiding the pursuing rebel ships. Similarly to indie titles like Spelunky and The Binding of Issac , this game helped repopularize and modernize the roguelike genre.
