With a whole range of ship systems and sectors of space to explore, there are all kinds of strategies players can employ to reach their destination. To lean into this idea, the game has ten different ships that players can use on their journey. Other than the Kestrel Cruiser, unlocked at the start of the game, each has its own specialty and is optimized for a specific style of play. While it is possible to unlock most ships by beating the game with the previous one in the list, the FTL: Faster Than Light 's difficulty means that likely won't happen. Instead, each ship has its own quest associated with unlocking it. These can be somewhat rare to come across, and players must perform particular actions to get the right ending. The reverence for the short game with a permadeath system that blends random encounters and player choice is a lasting one.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to spend multiple hours a day trying to beat a game I play for fun - if I get a free 10 minute break I'll play this - it's super rare that I have the time to make it to the last sector and I've only even sat down with the goal of beating the final boss once. Took a few hours and that was on easy.

You DON'T get this for defeating the final boss. Now I haven't wiped save data to test this out at all, but I believe the Crystal and Lanuis cruisers to be excluded from this rule. This will give you a quest marker, head there and you will be facing a ship next to a sun. Don't lose him! The only damage you can do is with your drone, but the Ion Weapon is amazing 1 Ion Damage, 4 second charge. The trade-off is that they are no use in hand-to-hand combat, meaning if anyone boards the ship, they may be in trouble. However, if the Backup Battery gets hacked, then 2 power bars will be drained from the ship's reactor on top of forcing the system cooldown and losing the temporary power bars along it. However, you have no weapons, and you need to be careful sending both Mantis over. Players can potentially go to both, but it will likely be hard to get to both before the Rebel fleet catches up. Starting with a Zoltan helps offset the power cost of the Artillery Beam. I don't recall ever seeing that weapon before on any video, and it makes sense to show off what that weapon does, since it seems more obscure and uncommon, rather than the Fire Bomb which everyone has generally seen before.

Special repair beacons in The Last Stand , including its entry beacon, repair your ship's hull as well as supplying resources the first time you visit them. Notes: It starts with no shields, which takes getting used to, but has Stealth right off the bat. Defeat it, and the Stealth Cruiser will be unlocked. Repair Drones die pretty quick in fires. Once they get to low HP, they'll stop and talk. This ship is by far the easiest to unlock , having a unique unlock condition. I only ever got 2 events, max. But get the pod and we move to the next random event! The player will also receive hull repair, fuel, scrap and the powerful Crystal Vengeance augmentation for their efforts. Not the most flashy ship, but a solid ship nonetheless. In other words, have 5 ships available for use.
