Lewis Hamilton ended the opening day of action at the Bahrain Grand Prix on top after setting the fastest lap in the second free practice hour, leading team mate George Russell in a Mercedes one-two. With the majority of teams — barring McLaren, RB and Kick Sauber — opting to save the soft tyre for these cooler conditions rather than using it in FP1, many opened their FP2 running on that compound as they carried out early qualifying simulation runs. It was Hamilton who set the initial pace, working his way down to a 1m Fernando Alonso was just eight hundredths back from Russell in third, and Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri were the leading drivers for their respective squads in P4 and P5 respectively. Verstappen ended the session in sixth place. Esteban Ocon and Zhou Guanyu were 18th and 19th, while Lando Norris ended the day in last place, having aborted his earlier flying lap due to a mistake.

The second free practice session in Saudi Arabia proved positive for Fernando Alonso. The start of practice was delayed ten minutes due to yet another problem with a driver cover. The session also went on for ten minutes longer than planned. The first 15 minutes of the second practice session saw many drivers get in each others way. During the mid-session qualifying run, Alonso was no less than five hundredths quicker than Max Verstappen , moving him to first place on the timesheet. Then again, during the long runs, Red Bull was a bit better than the competition. Sergio Perez , in particular, drove a very flat session with tyres that were already quite old. The wind appeared to play less havoc for the drivers in the late afternoon, with less mistakes over the course of FP2 in a session that only featured 19 drivers with Alex Albon's FP1 dramas leaving Williams with a huge headache for the rest of the weekend. Both Aston Martins surprised with both cars inside the top five, including Lance Stroll ahead of his team-mate Fernando Alonso in fourth.
