The term was coined by Durothilprince of TintageerFaerie. The continent included terrain that was as varied as any other.
I searched for the Martin Map of the Forgotten Realms for years. My editor pushed me to find it so I include its picture in my book. I heard rumors that it was in Seattle, where it was purchased by a geek bar and used as decoration, but the bar closed years ago and my messages to its Facebook page all went unanswered. But I was wrong. The map survived, and after a long journey, ended up hanging above a pub outside Madison, Wisconsin in vacuum-sealed, UV-resistant plastic.

A detailed map of the Forgotten Realms, circa Dalereckoning. This period is thirteen years after the Time of Troubles, at a moment in time when Luruar, the Kingdom of the Silver Marches, has just been founded in the North and the long-running Tethyrian Civil War has ended with the restoration of the kingdom, and just before the long-feared return of the Netherese Shades to Anauroch and the outbreak of war between the elves of Evereska and the phaerimm of the Underdark. Where possible I have brought 3 rd Edition locations and lore into these maps where it chronologically made sense to do so, but in some cases the changes such as the swapping of two rivers in the Great Dale made it impossible to reconcile them. The 4 th Edition of the setting moved the timeline much further into the future and destroyed much of the prior setting in a cataclysmic event known as the Spellplague, which to be frank I was not a fan of. This map attempts to be exhaustive, and those regions outside the Heartlands of the Realms have had as much detail added as pretty much exists in canonical sources. With the Heartlands area, however, it was simply impossible to add every single named hamlet, dungeon, mountain peak and road at this scale and have the result be anything legible. Some other areas of the continent had the same problem most notably the North. I may revisit these areas in a future, much larger-scaled map. This map is a monster, weighing in at 10, pixels wide and about 20MB in size. Those using computers may find it easier to save the entire map and load off a hard drive for fast scrolling and detail. The most prominent resource was The Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas by ProFantasy and Wizards of the Coast, the most extensive mapping project ever undertaken for the Forgotten Realms and probably any fantasy world, ever , utilising over maps to cover the entire planet of Toril in exacting detail. Alas, this product is long out of print and I was very lucky to still have a copy that worked after 21 years in service.

The product was discontinued after selling through its entire print in its first year, perhaps because of an electronic rights transfer between Wizards of the Coast and Atari. It is still found to be purchased at prices over the original purchase price on eBay. The license to the software has now reverted to the publisher, although the maps and other rights are owned by Wizards of the Coast.

The setting is also included extensively in the 5 th edition Dungeons and Dragons 5 e , with the Sword Coast region in particular acting as the setting for most first party adventure modules. The Forgotten Realms setting owes a lot of its popularity to the many novels using the setting, like R. Several major deities died during the Time of Troubles see deaths, ascensions, and resurrections and a handful of mortals rose to divinity. The interpretation of the term "present day" in the Forgotten Realms depends entirely upon the context in which it is used. Alternatively, they may set their games at any point during the Realms' past or future. The novels set in the Realms cover a wide variety of time periods too. This wiki does not focus on one specific time as being the "present day" - instead, it endeavours to provide specific date references where possible.
