Luka Kusic Updated on August 12, Ford has introduced the PATS system as a way to keep your vehicle more secure against theft. However, most of us see it as a nuisance that prevents us from easily replacing the ignition key, which is why we look for ways around it. The whole point of the PATS system is to prevent you from starting the vehicle without the original key that has the transponder chip. It acts as an anti-theft countermeasure by ensuring that the car can only be started with the original key. The chip does not require batteries and can last a lifetime. When you insert the encoded key into the ignition, the signal from the chip is received by a small antenna inside the steering wheel column shroud. When the key is turned to crank the engine, the antenna will pick up the signal and send it to the transceiver module. The signal is then passed on to the instrument cluster and the power control module PCM to decide whether or not the car should be started. All of the communication is done over the standard corporate protocol SCP communication network.
