Freddy Fazbear is the titular antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy's series and the main of the four original animatronics of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Freddy is an animatronic bear and the star attraction of the original Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, as well as the face and namesake of the company that owns it— Fazbear Entertainment. Freddy takes the role of lead singer and overall performer of the band, standing in the center of the stage. Undisclosed to Fazbear Entertainment and the public, Freddy is possessed by the restless spirit of Gabriel — a little boy murdered by William Afton. Due to this, Freddy and his likewise possessed bandmates are now seeking revenge against their common killer by attacking any similar-looking adults in the pizzeria after hours in a blind rage, not knowing that they, the children, are being manipulated by William Afton. However, Freddy is evidently friendly towards children and seeks to save his and his friends' own souls as well as any other children targeted by William Afton.

Five Nights at Freddy's is a horror video game in which you must survive after five nights at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza from the dangers of animatronic characters. Your mission is to try to survive five nights at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, where strange events often happen. As a nightshift guard, you need to keep an eye on animatronic characters' movements via the restaurant's security cameras and avoid getting caught by terrifying dolls. When you are captured, the game ends. Why are the animatronic characters so scary? The animatronic characters are usual during the day, but their behavior becomes unpredictable at night.

The player takes on the role of Mike Schmidt, a night security guard at a family pizzeria. Schmidt must complete his shifts without being confronted by the homicidal animatronic characters that wander the restaurant at night. The player has access to security cameras to monitor the animatronics throughout the shift, and a set of steel doors that can lock out the characters. Using the cameras and doors consumes the player's limited electricity, and draining all of the power causes these tools to become inoperable. Reviewers complained of its unintentionally frightening characters that had animatronic-like movement, inspiring Cawthon to create an intentionally scarier experience.
