Starting with Windows Server someone at Microsoft apparently thought it was a great idea to make the various application-windows borderless, making it really hard to see the windows. Below is an example of two File Explorer windows overlapping, the arrow pointing to the top border of the window in front, file explorer border missing. We use Virtual Apps and file explorer does not have a border with Server , so if one launches multiple file explorers and their borders overlap, it is impossible to figure out where one window ends and the other begins. Setting the registry value for each user is easy. Create a Group Policy for your servers or modify an existing one. Add a new Registry item. Browse to your Value and set the data. Then repeat for remaining keys. It's kind of like procmon but for registry. It monitors changes to the registry for a specific process. Then it displays what it captured to a window. The border is actually not missing you can see that on the coloured areas on the image above , but the Windows Explorer border colour changes to white when you set focus to it, and then it very often looks as if there was no border at all, since other windows below often tend to have a white background. White on white is not a good combination. I consider this a design flaw. Setting focus to an Explorer window should never, or at least not by default, make the outer borders of that window disappear turn white. To get a visible border as it was in older versions of windows , you can of turn on shadows effects, or if you want no "effects", even simpler : you can turn on accent colours for "Title bars and window borders", and select an accent colour.

The borders on my windows are missing so when I have multiple windows on my screen it's often impossible to know the edges of any one window. For example when the background of two windows are the same color e. So for example, in the example I've shown here, I've taken a snap of this current window as it appears overlayed on another window on my screen at the moment and as you can see you cannot easily determine the left hand side of this window.
