This is a remaster of a game which means you're basically playing the original game with a coat of polish. I understand that the source code to Final Fantasy VIII is lost to time which strikes me as really flipping careless so the source material is a decompiled version of the PC port run through an x86 emulator. On the plus side, the character and creature models have been sharpened up no end. On the minus side, the rest of the assets, designed for being rendered at x rather than p, haven't. The high quality of the art style means that this isn't such an issue in towns and dungeons, but the overworld, where you'll spend a distressing amount of your time, is a disaster. Being taken from the PC port makes the remaster worse in some aspects than the PS1 original. For example, since there is no real analogue support, you are restricted to moving in cardinal directions. Because of this, there was one sidequest that I simply couldn't complete until I rotated the world map so that my character was facing a cardinal direction. That sort of sheer clunkiness is very jarring. One thing that the remaster does bring to the table is a couple of cheat modes.
