The summer heat wave sweeping across the United States has a new name: Viktor Hovland. Running away from the field in record fashion at the Tour Championship, Hovland finished the week at 27 under and five strokes clear of Xander Schauffele to claim his first FedEx Cup. Beginning the week at 8 under, Hovland was the top name on both the official leaderboard and the shadow leaderboard which the Official World Golf Rankings recognizes as his hole total of under matched that of Schauffele's. Hovland did most of the heavy lifting early in the week, but the laidback Sunday stroll most envisioned was anything but stress-free. Starting off the final round with a six-stroke lead, the year-old was faced with immediate stress as a two-hour weather delay arrived just as he was lining up a foot par putt on No. While all 29 of Hovland's counterparts were busy on the driving range in the lead up to the restart, he was hanging out on the putting green. Practicing a left-to-right tickler, Hovland's added reps paid dividends as his successful conversion for par was met with an unsuccessful birdie bid from Schauffele.

The second leg of the three-tournament championship series determines the 30 golfers headed to the Tour Championship. Twenty players will try to make up the gap to Sam Burns in 30th place. Rahm, Scheffler and McIlroy all need strong performances at Olympia Fields to keep their advantages at the top of the leaderboard. Second place begins at eight-under, third place starts at seven-under, fourth place at six-under and fifth place at five-under. The rest of the Tour Championship field is bunched together from four-under down to even par. Any advantage could help when the FedEx Cup reaches its final destination. Lucas Glover in fourth place may be the biggest threat to the top three since he is the hottest golfer on the PGA Tour. Glover surged into fourth place with his win in Memphis last week. He won his last two PGA Tour starts. At minimum, Glover clinched a high starting spot at the Tour Championship.

For the third and final round of the FedEx Cup playoffs, only the top 30 players in the FedEx points standings are eligible. The field was trimmed—and shuffled—at last week's BMW Championship. Viktor Hovland won that tournament and the accompanying 2, FedEx points to vault into second place in the standings. Scottie Scheffler's second-place finish tied moved him to the top of the leaderboard, while Rory McIlroy remains in third. Jon Rahm, who entered the playoffs as the points leader, has dropped to fourth after two less-than-ideal weekends of golf.

While 30 has always been the number at the Tour Championship, the St. Jude Championship was reduced from top to top 70 this year and the BMW bumped down to the top These smaller fields have made the bubble watch for the following event even more interesting than normal as the top 50 in this year's FedEx Cup automatically qualify for the eight small-field signature events on next year's PGA Tour schedule. As noted earlier, the top 30 move on to the Tour Championship. All three events are hole, stroke-play tournaments, though the fields gradually get smaller as the playoffs roll on. The points change, too, as everything is quadrupled. During regular season events, most winners receive FedEx Cup points for finishing first at tournaments in a handful of events, points went to first place. The winners of the first two FedEx Cup Playoffs events will instead receive 2, points each. The point boost goes for every slot on the leaderboard: for second becomes 1, and so on.
