A closely-fought qualifying session means the inaugural Las Vegas Grand Prix on Saturday night will boast one of the most varied grids of the season, with no less than eight teams featuring in the top 10 for lights-out. The Scuderia dominated qualifying, but a place grid penalty means Carlos Sainz will start from P12 , rather than alongside his team mate. Mercedes' George Russell and Alpine's Pierre Gasly make up row two, the latter securing his best grid slot of the year, and then come the Williams — the standout performers in qualifying — with Alex Albon in P5 and rookie Logan Sargeant starting his home race from a career-best P6. Row four comprises Valtteri Bottas in the Alfa Romeo and Kevin Magnussen in the Haas, while Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton complete the top half of the grid, both former champions having endured disappointing qualifying sessions. The practice form book was turned on its head in qualifying for the Mexico City Grand Prix, as Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz locked out the front row for Ferrari, forcing pre-session favourite Max Verstappen to settle for third for Red Bull, with former team mate Daniel Ricciardo a sensational fourth for AlphaTauri. Less happy after qualifying was podium regular Lando Norris, who wound up only 19th for McLaren — he will start 17th for the Grand Prix. And at the back of the grid we have Williams' Logan Sargeant, who failed to set a qualifying time and picked up a place grid penalty for a yellow-flag infringement, in 20th, just behind Yuki Tsunoda in the second AlphaTauri. Tsunoda had already been demoted to the back of the grid earlier in the weekend for taking on multiple new power unit and gearbox components.
