Emperor Belos is the main antagonist of The Owl House. Originally a human named Philip Wittebane , he arrived in the Boiling Isles from Gravesfield, Connecticut during the Deadwardian Era the mids in the Human Realm in pursuit of his brother, Caleb , who was spirited away to the realm, keeping a written record of his experiences on the Boiling Isles as he endeavored to find a way to return to the Human Realm. Due to his inherent intense hatred of witches and magic , with which he gained additional resentment due to the Isles' prejudice against humans causing him to be alienated, Philip would eventually conspire to eliminate the Isles and its inhabitants as a whole in an attempt to save humanity from their supposed wickedness. In order to carry through with this plot, Philip would take on a new identity as a witch named Belos. While studying the Boiling Isles' nature and working on a portal back to the Human Realm, Philip discovered that Caleb fell in love with a witch named Evelyn and killed him for this, before deciding to eliminate all life on the Isles so he would be rewarded and hailed as a hero back in the Human Realm. Before The Owl House season 3 returns for its next special, here's the complete timeline of Emperor Belos so far. Two orphaned brothers arrive in Gravesfield.
Emperor belos
During the 17th century, orphaned brothers Philip and Caleb Wittebane arrived in Gravesfield, Connecticut to become witch hunters, where they met a witch named Evelyn who convinced Caleb to follow her into the Demon Realm. Philip followed them, believing Caleb to have been led astray, and soon discovered that Caleb had fallen in love with Evelyn during his time in the Demon Realm. This drove an enraged Philip to kill his own brother in a knife fight, which in turn lead Evelyn to curse Philip as he fled, forcing him to consume the souls of palismen over the centuries to stay alive. Creating the identity of "Belos" after being "run out of too many towns", he took over the Boiling Isles while using propaganda to ban "wild magic", and establish a system for magic users to use their magic "the right way". This led to him establishing different Covens, where those who do not join are sentenced to irreversible petrification.

However, he was so obsessed about his beliefs and desire to have everything to be the way he saw fit, that he came to fear things that were out of his control. It becomes a more straightforward example when he's revealed to be a False Prophet in "Hollow Mind", making up his supposed connection with the Titan and egalitarian agenda and actually being in a Faustian bargain with the Collector to wipe out witch kind, making the Coven System an Apocalypse Cult. Philip dressed in what appeared to be 17th-century English formal attire, consisting of a waistcoat, thigh-length overcoat, and breeches. We're human , we're better than this! And the Collector is redeemed when they spills out their trauma to Luz, allowing Luz to sympathize with their insecurities and ultimately show them the error of their ways. Prior to his debut, he was alluded to in " Keeping up A-fear-ances ". You do know what happens to covenless witches, don't you? Later, in "Thanks to Them", Belos works to reconstitute himself by taking control of Human Realm wildlife and parasitically draining them of their essence and adding it to his own, with Hunter being the final unlucky victim before Belos manages to fully recreate his monstrous Palismen form. His brother Caleb "betrayed" him by marrying a witch, and Belos has been making Grimwalker clones of him for centuries, working hard to find a way to make them follow him unquestioningly in his mad quest to commit genocide. He also seems to place a lot of trust in him. A restless wanderer shall you be on the earth. Before becoming the emperor, Philip was initially shown to be an inquisitive and meek individual with a strong intellectual drive. Later, it is revealed that Luz was a large pawn in his plan to kill the witches of the Boiling Isles, manipulating her as his true identity, Philip Wittebane, in order to meet the Collector, thereby indirectly helping him cause the Day of Unity. More details can be added to expand it. When he did eventually find his brother in said world — without any concrete means of returning to Earth himself — he found out that Caleb was in a loving relationship with her instead and was content to live in the Demon Realm, even fathering a child with her.

Chronic Backstabbing Disorder : Belos seems incapable of making a deal without betraying his allies the instant he gets what he wants. But when he discovered that Caleb and Evelyn were in love, he became so enraged that he attacked the two and ended up killing Caleb. His mask resembles a crow's beak with the "antlers" possibly being plumes and his cape wings; the iconography of his coven system and his own staff bear feathered wings, and his gloves resemble talons in paintings and most of the gloves he wears are golden and segmented, making them look like avian scaled feet. Fungus tend to grow on dead things, its presence on trees a sign that they are either dead of dying, showing that all he is to the Boiling Isles is a cancerous, rotting thing that corrupts and destroys everything it touches. However, because of his prolonged suppressing of the carved glyphs, and need to continuously consume palismen, Belos' physical state degraded over the years. Shortly after abandoning the two, outside the cave, Philip was heading back with the tablet when he was confronted by Luz and Lilith, who had tamed the Stonesleeper. However, the show gradually peeled back more layers of Belos's past, revealing that there is far more to the Emperor than meets the eye. However, a young girl named Luz , who had traveled back in time to meet Philip along with a woman named Lilith , intervened and scared off the demons. More details can be added to expand it. It signifies a decaying vein. When the tide is at its lowest and a solar eclipse occurs, everyone must travel to the head of the Titan. He assumed Lilith would continue to serve him after his true plans for her sister, Eda, were revealed, simply shrugging off her betrayal and intended for her to be petrified along with her sister. When Luz yells for Eda to complete the spell to pull her and Hunter out of his mindscape, it's presented as a near thing and Luz sounds more like a scared little girl than she ever has in the show.
