Elizabeth Wettlaufer was born and raised in Zorra Township , a rural community near Woodstock , Ontario. Wettlaufer then studied nursing at Conestoga College. In , Wettlaufer was hired onto the staff at Caressant Care, a long-term care home in Woodstock. She was initially regarded by co-workers as caring and professional. However, throughout her tenure, Wettlaufer struggled with substance abuse and alcoholism. She faced accusations of showing up to work drunk, and at one point was found passed out in the facility's basement during the night shift. Wettlaufer was suspended four times for "medication-related errors", then was finally fired in March over a "serious" incident in which she gave the wrong medication to a patient. After leaving Caressant Care, Wettlaufer had difficulty holding down a job. She was hired by the Meadow Park Care Center in London , but lost this job after checking herself into a drug rehab facility in Niagara. She took various temp jobs at other care homes. Wettlaufer admitted to a neighbour that she was fired from one of these jobs for stealing medication, and was fired from another job for making a medication error while high that nearly resulted in the death of a patient. While she was a nurse at Caressant Care, Wettlaufer began injecting some of the patients she cared for with insulin. In some cases, the amount was not enough to kill the patient; she was charged with, and confessed to, aggravated assault or attempted murder for those cases.

The attorneys spoke with the serial killer nurse prior to the start of the inquiry, which began in June at the Elgin County Courthouse in St. Thomas, Ont. The inquiry was called after Wettlaufer was convicted of eight counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated assault; offences she committed while working as a registered nurse in long-term care homes in Ontario. In the lead-up to the inquiry, lawyers went to the prison on Feb. For two hours, they spoke with Wettlaufer, who chose not to have a lawyer present. One of the questions she was asked was what she thinks could have stopped, or reduced, her killing spree?
Here, Sky News speaks to psychologists about possible motivations for such horrific crimes. I killed them on purpose because I'm not good enough to care for them. Lucy Letby is a serial killer, the most prolific child murderer of modern times in the UK; her name now forever associated with the likes of other medical monsters such as GP Harold Shipman and nurse Beverley Allitt. She is also one of the most prolific female serial killers in British history, alongside the likes of Rose West and Moors murderer Myra Hindley. After a complex and harrowing trial lasting more than nine months, jurors found her guilty of murdering seven infants and attempting to murder six more - one of them twice - during a year-long period between and , while working on the Countess of Chester's neonatal unit. In pictures taken at work and socially, Letby, 33, is smiling, carefree-looking, apparently happy. You might describe her as someone who looks "nice" or "kind" or "friendly" or like a million other young women, about as far-removed as you could get from the image of a serial killer that would spring to mind for most. The motivation behind such an horrific killing spree, taking the lives of tiny babies who didn't stand a chance, is unfathomable - even to some experts who have spent years profiling murderers.
