Elijah Mikaelson is an Original Vampire. He is the son of Esther and Mikael Mikaelson. He is the husband of Dianna Mikaelssen and the father of Olympia Mikaelson. He is the son-in-law of Alaina Olsen and Cyrus Labonair. He is also the adoptive father of Saga Mikaelssen. He is the older maternal half brother of Niklaus Mikaelson.

He was formerly a major recurring character in The Vampire Diaries , serving initially as an antagonist in the second season and eventually becoming a supporting character and protagonist in the third season and fourth seasons. Elijah was an Original Vampire. Elijah was the third child and second son of Mikael and Esther. He was the younger brother of Freya and Finn , and the older brother of Kol , Rebekah and Henrik and the older half-brother of Klaus. Throughout his long life, Elijah had several romantic relationships. Elijah accidentally killed Tatia after he became a vampire and was traumatized and horrified by the violence of his actions towards her. Elijah's mother, told him to seal the event behind a "red door" and to clean himself up. As long as he was clean, nothing of what happened behind the red door could hurt him. As such, this became Elijah's defense mechanism to cope with the horrors of his vampirism for the next thousand years. In the 19th century, Elijah was romantically involved with a witch named Celeste Dubois , whose death was later caused by his half-brother Klaus. In the 21st century, Elijah rekindled his relationship with Katerina Petrova aka Katherine Pierce, before ending it to go to New Orleans to help Klaus. In New Orleans, Elijah developed feelings for Hayley Marshall, who was carrying Klaus' child, after he had promised to protect her and the child. Elijah respectfully kept his distance while she was married to Jackson Kenner. In the second season of The Originals , he and Klaus continued to work in a combined effort to stop Esther, Finn and a resurrected Mikael, while struggling with reawakened sins from his past. In the third season , he made it his mission to prevent a prophecy depicting his family's downfall from coming to pass, even taking on his first sired vampire to do it.

Unlike his unpredictable and threatening siblings, Klaus and Rebekah, Elijah had a noble demeanor that contradicted his vampire nature. Always impeccably dressed in a suit and tie and speaking in a formal cadence that gave weight to his pronouncements, Elijah came across as the only Original with a moral compass. His dedication to his family, his desire to do better, and his restraint in the face of desire all made him uniquely appealing. Of course, at heart, he was still a long-lived vampire who was no longer entirely in touch with his humanity. And fans rooted for him in his struggle against his vampirism.

Hayley then confesses to him that she has always loved him, yet due to guilt over Jackson's death, she decides to leave New Orleans with Klaus and Hope, in an attempt to get over her feelings for Elijah. This hurt Elijah, and says to Hayley. However, Davina is killed by Kol when the Ancestors take control of Kol, and her soul is torn apart by the Ancestors as a punishment for her actions. When he arrived back at the Mikaelson mansion, he discovered Hayley was gone and called Rebekah if Hayley was with her, Klaus then came and told him that Marcel had been here. Camille had an understanding of Klaus' complexity and is unafraid to call Klaus out on his rash behavior. Elijah tries to calm Klaus down after he tried to run from Elijah, he tries to convince him to forgive Rebekah and be the kind of man Mikael never was, Klaus shut him down as to think he would show mercy to those who have betrayed him. He calls Sophie from his phone and asks how they can enter, she gives some ideas and Elijah then figures out that he could use the blood of Klaus' unborn child to break the spell. Elijah continued to struggle with what Esther had done to him, being overcome with his violent vampire instincts anytime he became dirty, including when he was stacking logs. They participated in activities of the count's court, including ax throwing competitions, and their secret remained unnoticed. Rebekah leaves them and hides, while Elijah and Klaus are at each other. Klaus then came to the boy, named him Marcellus and brought him to the family, Elijah saw this and told his sister: "Perhaps there is hope for our brother after all". Rebekah has, therefore, come to fear, hate, and resent Klaus, even as she tries to honor Elijah's wish that they become a complete family once again. Elijah and Klaus then find Sophie and tell her that their deal is off, then brought Sophie to the Mikaelson Mansion. In the season three finale, while Matt is driving Elena back to Mystic Falls, after trying to escape with her, Rebekah is seen standing in the middle of Wickery Bridge. Elijah leaves Hayley, and goes to the Cemetery where Sophie is and tells her that cares that she has undog his former girlfriend, he is then asking her to come with him.

Elijah has to rediscover life in the aftermath of Marcel erasing his memories.

It shattered, which sent the vampires inside running for cover. Elijah then knew she had been abducted by Marcel. Damon says that they should be at the old witch house, where the Original proceed to confront their mother and brother Finn. His sister was killed by werewolves but Elijah tells him that he'll have to try and make peace with the werewolves despite what happened. He says just one but tells him that her guard fought valiantly but then Francesca fled. Elijah convinces her by showing her a body jump spell from his mother's grimoire and says if Celeste tries to switch a body this spell would bring her to her original body. Josh and Tina were subsequently attacked by vampires and were severely injured. Ultimately, he didn't. He carried guilt for the rest of his life for not stopping their father's beatings against his brother. Klaus told her no and told her that if she turned every boy she fell in love with, the humans would cease to exist. It is unknown what would happen to any vampires she sires if she is destroyed, though, given the nature of her transformation, it is possible that they would survive. The next day at the compound Klaus gives Elijah some advice. At the start of season 4, she is awoken by Hayley for five years and is successful in curing her siblings.
