I just had to drain a 18 speed truck transmission yesterday and it seems like all a guy can find for transmission oil is synthetic. This truck is mainly used just in the summer to pull a water tanker. Is there any other non synthetic transmission oils or different weight of oil that a person can use in these older 18 speed standard transmissions? I do not really want to have one of the trucks with synthetic and the rest wiith conventional transmission oil. I still have a part pail of what was the Esso equivalent and use it if need be to top up a transmission in an older truck that doesn't see winter anymore. I would have to look at the pail but I believe they call that a GL3 rated oil because it does not contain any extreme pressure additives that will destroy the shifting qualities and perhaps even ruin the syncros themselves such as using a typical 80W90 GL5. Its years ago now when I had last bought it and then the local dealer said they couldn't get it anymore.

Energy spent trying to find an obsolete oil vs. No harm in asking around but I ended up getting what most all trucks on the road have used for a number of years now which is the synthetic 50 trans oil and its certainly better in the winter and I know my own plan when I had to dump oil out of any older trucks older tandems with what I call the baby 13 etc is to put the eaton fuller 18 speed transmission oil type synthetic oil in if I can't get the older straight mineral oil.
