All of a sudden out of the blue, you glance down and notice that your coolant temperature needle is to the right of the 12 o'clock position, or horror of horrors the red light is on! Remember Me? BMW Models. M series. E36 M3 Overheating issues at idle. Results 1 to 15 of Thread: E36 M3 Overheating issues at idle. Thread Tools Show Printable Version. My E36 M3 will slowly overheat sometimes at idle. When I rev the engine a bit, it will cause it to go back down. I used to have a small leak, which is what I thought was causing it but I fixed the leak, and its continuing. Yesterday, it started to creep up at idle, even with plenty of coolant in it. To the best of my knowledge, It is not a problem with the head gasket, we did a chemical test a few weeks ago and it did fine.
It really sounds like that there is air trapped in the systeme36 overheating, otherwise it would be a gradual increase in temp Also, this part from the comments section sounded familiar: vic Comments: dear wayne i have a bmw i e36 overheating i just replaced the radiator the water pump thermostate and clutch fan on and the damn thing is still blowing cold air and sometimes overheats i have bled the system and still nothing please help Followup from the Pelican Staff: Blowing cold air instead of hot air through the heater? No, e36 overheating, create an account now.
I drive a '97 that recently had a problem with the temperature gauge hit the red zone in traffic. The temperature didn't stay there long, though; I pulled into a parking lot to shut it off, but found the temperature would drop when it got moving, so I managed to limp it home. Found out that sure enough, the auxiliary electric fan was dead. It wouldn't do anything when I fed it 12 volts by jumpering the fan relay. So I replaced that, and the new fan does switch on when I give it power. Should be an easy fix, right? But I've found now that if I turn the engine off for a few minutes while hot and then have the car idle without moving for about two minutes or so, the fuel gauge can start climbing again.

Get her home safely.

Full cold or full hot, stick a rolled up magazine against the fan blades and see if it stops. It was too nice. All of a sudden out of the blue, you glance down and notice that your coolant temperature needle is to the right of the 12 o'clock position, or horror of horrors the red light is on! If the problem persists, it may be something more serious, like thermostat, water pump, head gasket Check your fan, fan clutch and the auxiliary pusher fan. When cruising down the road at freeway speeds, with outside temperature less then desert conditions, the fan should be merely be idling along, turning just fast enough to add a little air flow when needed, in this way the fan noise and drag on the engine is greatly reduced. If it shreds the magazine, the fan clutch is good. If you plan on keeping the car, and live in a hot climate, consider a Zionsville Autosports radiator. This is a prime candidate model for plastic pump failure.

Remember, this must be tested after the car has been off for and extended period, over night etc. What could be the problem? There is no "mistake" in the design, just a side effect of the fact that BMW runs an extremely high cooling system pressure. Bet it must be a right bummer changing HG on one of these :S. That was another thought I had, how the frick do you bleed these mofos lol? M3 motors require Thread: E36 M3 Overheating issues at idle. Yer I tried with a thick peice of cardboard lol! I have removed this idea :)
Certainly. All above told the truth.
