Domino squad
Welcome to Character Histories.
It wouldn't be unreasonable to say that clone troopers are one of the most beloved aspects of the Star Wars universe. At the core of the appeal, however, is the more in-depth side of the clones. Their personalities, stories, and camaraderie with one another bring them to life. Shows like Star Wars: The Clone Wars have excelled at expanding upon the clones beyond the surface level, getting viewers attached to those who have become some of the most instantly recognizable Star Wars characters. Among these characters are a group of clones known as the Domino Squad, who from the very earliest points in the Clone Wars were serving in the Grand Army of the Republic.

The members of the squad, at first, proved unable to effectively work together as a team, but they ultimately passed their tests on Kamino and became full members of the Grand Army of the Republic. After graduation, they were stationed at Rishi Station on the Rishi Moon , a strategic point on a route to Kamino. During a mission on Lola Sayu , while escaping, Echo noticed a commando droid targeting a shuttle with a laser turret. He advanced to secure their ship, ultimately being blown up with the ship in a massive explosion that led his comrades to believe he was killed. Despite the loss of Echo and Piell's death later during the mission, it was ultimately a success. Unbeknownst to everyone, Echo survived the explosion, but was gravely injured and was taken prisoner by Separatist forces and kept alive via cybernetics.

When viewed in chronological order rather than release order, their stories begin in the fourth episode with the introduction of a small group of clones - notably including Echo. The squad's name became something of a dark pun, as each domino fell as the Clone Wars continued. Fives was technically the last domino to fall in Star Wars: The Clone Wars , but the trope was subverted when it was revealed Echo was still alive. Rescued by the Bad Batch, he chose to join Clone Force 99 , and remained with them after Order 66 and the rise of the Empire. In doing so, Echo became the last member of Domino Squad to fall - not by dying, but by leaving his squad.

The final season of The Clone Wars features the return of Echo , a long-lost Clone that hasn't appeared seen since Season 3 when he was thought to be killed at the hands of the Separatists. Echo's death left his comrade-in-arms Fives as the only remaining member of the lovable group of Clones known as the Domino Squad. But how did how the group grow to such prominence in The Clone Wars?
For years following the Clone Wars, Echo carried on the heroic legacy of his former brothers in fighting for forces of good, allowing the legacy of the Domino Squad to live on in the Star Wars galaxy. Although the Kaminoans who were secretly working for Dooku and Darth Sidious wanted to terminate Tup to do an autopsy to determine the cause of his ailment, Fives convinced AZI-3 to do an atomic-level brain scan on Tup, which led to them finding a tumour in his brain. The Poletecs joined Skywalker and the clones in the fight and together they successfully defeated the Separatists. Knowing he would not fit with the regular clone forces, Echo found a new family with this squad. Following that incident, however, it was discovered that Echo had survived the explosion and was being held by Wat Tambor on Skako Minor. And so it was thought that Domino Squad were all gone. Fives and Echo requested a transfer to a more successful squad, but Shaak Ti turned them down and informed them that the squad would be given a chance to re-take the test the next day. However on the way there, Nala Se secretly drugged him. While trying to escape an ambush from Separatist battle droids, Echo was hit with a blast from a powerful turret, which apparently killing him instantly. After telling Fives of a recurring nightmare of a mission, Tup declared himself free and passed away. The Domino Squad started off the same as any other clone squadron, going through various training sessions on Kamino, where they struggled to work as a unit. The members of the squad, at first, proved unable to effectively work together as a team, but they ultimately passed their tests on Kamino and became full members of the Grand Army of the Republic. There was a planned arc prior to the cancellation of The Clone Wars that would have seen Echo and the rest of Clone Force 99 on Kashyyyk, so this can probably still be considered canon for now, but there is nothing to say what their involvement was in Order 66 or the resulting rise of the Empire.
