I suppose the intention of this spell was to be something a player could use to escape if they were chained up in a tower, dnd gaseous form it looks like one of those spells that has a secret practical use like magic stone or magic mouth, dnd gaseous form. The target can't fall and remains hovering in the air even when stunned or otherwise incapacitated. While in the form of a misty cloud, the target can't talk or manipulate objects, and any objects it was carrying or holding can't be dropped, used, or otherwise interacted with. The target can't attack or cast spells.

It's a 3rd level spell; that's well into "powerful magic" and "things beyond the ken of mortal man" kind of territory to the layman. I mean, your first instinct upon seeing a mysterious cloud drift through the room is hardly going to be "I attack the darkness mist", outside of some serious metagame BS on the GMs part. Likewise, how would Players react to an encroaching mist?
