The Vow of the Disciple Raid has introduced Guardians to a few key details regarding the expanded lore in Destiny 2 , specifically, information about the Worm Gods and the Hive. The Hive species have long been a key antagonist of both Destiny and Destiny 2 , and they're among one of the oldest documented species in the game. For roughly five billion years, the Hive have conquered planet after planet and system after system to feed the hunger tribute of their Worms. Much like the Krill, the species that the Hive evolved from, the homeworld of the Worms Gods is a planet called Fundament. Though Fundament is considered their homeworld, however, the Worm Gods' actual origins remain a mystery. According to the Darkness, the paracausal force that is the main antagonist of the Destiny series at large, certain entities existed before time or the universe began.

Xol, Will of the Thousands was one of the five Worm Gods , ancient paracausal creatures that mastered the Sword Logic and reputed as the creators of the Hive pantheon. He was worshipped by his High Priest Nokris, Herald of Xol and the Grasp of Nokris prior to his death and defection, and is the main antagonist of the Warmind expansion. Making a pact with Oryx's estranged son, Nokris , the two fled their families and sought a new world to rule. At some point either before or after Nokris's excommunication, Xol created the Ogre Golgoroth to challenge Oryx. However, his kin, Eir , intervened to remake the beast into an even more monstrous and powerful shape to serve Oryx instead and protect the Tablets of Ruin. After Nokris' excommunication by Oryx, Nokris and Xol departed from the rest of the Hive and set out to find a new world to rule. Xol and Nokris engaged with the Warmind Rasputin and became trapped under the Hellas Basin of Mars , before being reawakened by multiple Warsat impacts in the region and the Traveler's reawakening centuries later. Upon reawakening, Xol and his worshippers, the Grasp of Nokris, sought to gain control of Mars by destroying the Warmind Rasputin. Their plans were interrupted by the intervention of the Guardian , who defeated Nokris and attempted to execute a plan by Commander Zavala to lure Xol into a trap with a Light-filled shard of the Traveler. Xol appeared before the Guardian and assaulted them telepathically, rendering them unconscious. The Guardian recovered shortly thereafter, however. As Xol set about destroying Rasputin's neural network, he was pursued by the Guardian to the vicinity of Rasputin's central core, where he trapped the Guardian on a platform and engaged them in battle, using his jaws, bulk and paracausal abilities to attempt to destroy his foe. Ultimately, Xol was defeated by the Guardian using a super-charged Valkyrie javelin provided by Rasputin, leaving the Grasp of Nokris without their patron to worship and reducing the remainder of the Worm God pantheon from four to three. As with other Worm Gods, however, Xol's death was not his ending. Drawing power from the Sword Logic upon his defeat at the hands of the Guardian, Xol transcended physical death and communed with the Taken infesting the Jovian moon Io , resurrecting three former enemies of humanity as his Taken champions.

All Hive are bound symbiotically with a larva farmed from a mother Worm , which drives them to feed off constant conquest and destruction lest the Worm grow unsatisfied and consume them instead. While the ultimate origins of the Worms are unknown, the Lore Book Unveiling seems to indicate they may be as old as the universe itself. According to Unveiling , in the primordial state before time or the universe began, entities existed which derived sustenance from the gradient between "what was and what might be.

Akka, the Worm of Secrets was one of the five Worm Gods , ancient beings second only to the Darkness itself in the hierarchy of the Hive pantheon. Billions of years ago, Akka and the other Worm Gods were trapped deep beneath Fundament and guarded by the Leviathan. Rhulk would convince them to pledge their allegiance to the Witness and would take their mother Xita, the Nurturing Worm from the deep oceans of Fundament to his ship. The Worm Gods offered them power and immortality in exchange for becoming parasitized by their larvae. The Worm Gods oversaw the Hive's conquest of Fundament, providing knowledge, orders, and censure to their leaders as necessary. When the war freed the Worm Gods from Fundament's core, they responded by opening a wormhole into geostationary orbit, allowing the Hive to invade Fundament's moons and the Ammonite civilization that dwelled there.
