By newfoundmass , June 1, In: Cameras. David Thorpe passed away on May 25th. For those that aren't familiar, David was a huge proponent of M43 and shared his love of photography on his blog and YouTube channel. He was one of my favorite writers and video bloggers. With his unique and interesting insights, he could easily entertain even when discussing a mundane camera bag or consumer lens. He certainly contributed to my love for the m43 format. It's a sad irony that as we find new life being breathed into the these smaller cameras, we have lost one of their most talented advocates.

I remember an amazing interior from a Peter Sellars film with a cocktail party going on in a front room full of rocks, rugs and bubbling streams with wooden bridges over them. There are very decorative buildings, with eclectic materials, a manic home-made-ness, a mad hybrid of progressive structural engineering, Barratt home and ritzy Hollywood producer. When I look at these kinds of buildings, I have a sort of fictional ideal of the lifestyle of the people inside. The fantasy makes the structures exciting. There is a house in Malibu, where I assume the guy who lives inside has got a six-pack, a white cat and must be hiding something. He has guns hidden somewhere. There must be some kind of underground bunker down deep under the garage. I think that comes from novels. You can't help imagining the scene, then film and tv memories mix in.

Private Lives, a plaster form resting on wooden legs, is similarly adorned with stylised leaves and vines made of carefully cut leather. Emanating from it is a light that imbues the sculpture with an almost devotional symbolic charge of self-sufficiency. In the past Thorpe has made elaborate collaged paintings, but his more recent work explores the actualisation of pattern through unusual three-dimensional renderings that highlight the tension between exquisite decorativeness and the aura of DIY home-craft manuals. David Thorpe, Private Lives, Plaster, leather, light system, wood stand The works shown here all make reference to an interconnectedness between ideology and lifestyle. I Am Golden is a miniature temple-like structure that also doubles as a plant stand. Endeavours and Private Lives both allude to the aesthetics and theories of the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th century and the democratising art ideals of William Morris and John Ruskin.
