After a longer wait than I might have wanted, the Switch version finally released. Fun fact — hunting for mushrooms can be pretty darned addictive! Real quickly, let me say that I have a ton of respect and appreciation for the author who reviewed the PC edition of the game. Now, while Coromon is a ton of fun once you get going, there was a small issue that slowed me down from actually starting the game. The first thing it wanted me to do was sign into my Nintendo account, despite the fact I have my Switch set up to do that automatically. Once I got past that hurdle, which likely is meant to allow cross-platform play between PC and Switch, I started to enjoy myself much more.

Reviewer's note: In the interest of accurately representing the complete game, I have chosen to post this review unscored until I have been able to see more of the world and advanced gameplay. I would like to mention that I do feel confident in recommending Coromon at this time on Switch. And I think the creators of Coromon have realized this. But I was struck by how fresh the world and design of Coromon feels. It makes some dedicated efforts to invite comparison, but also shows how Coromon tries to bring its own ideas to the table. But overall their designs are very creative and expressive. What separates Coromon, however, is the way the creatures are trained and leveled. Not only are the differences visible, but superior Coromon also have a different color palette compared to their standard variants; superior and perfect Coromon improve their potential much faster, too. Potential is a separate bar from the experience bar that can level up individually. Once it maxes out, you are free to distribute additional stat points to your Coromon. Superior Coromon max out their potential bar faster and Perfect Coromon even more so. This gives a player so much customization as to how they want to raise their Coromon. Do you want to immediately invest the additional stat-points into the highest base stats?

Wow I thought from the title the game was just going to be a low effort Pokemon gameboy like game and then I saw those amazing sprites and animations. The monster designs are great too! Now, we've got a reason to go back, as the developer announced that a brand new update has dropped for the game. It's a beefy update too, and the first one for Switch, with the two major headlines being Trait Enhancement and the reduction of RNG.

There are three total variations of each, though; each Coromon has a ranking of Standard, Potent, or Perfect, depending on how high its Potential stat is, a mechanic that takes the place of the Shiny system. The game was originally due to be released on Switch back in March, but due to cross-platform multiplayer issues, the game was delayed on the console.
