In , Continental introduced the Grand Prix TL, which was just their first try at a tubeless road bike tire. Performance of the TL was so strong that it quickly became the most popular tubeless road bike tire. Just three years later, Continental introduced the Grand Prix S TR and made some significant changes to its design. An indication of the popularity of the Continental Grand Prix series was the rapid rise of the S TR in our tire voting list, where our Pro Members get a monthly vote and decide which tires will get tested. The Grand Prix S TR surpassed all other tires, of which some have been on the list for five months, in just eight days of voting.

Referencia: It is lighter, faster and, thanks to reinforced sidewalls, even more comfortable and reliable than its direct predecessor, the Grand Prix TL. A revised tyre bead now also ensures compatibility with hookless rims. The S TR concentrates modern Conti technologies to wring maximum performance from the tyre. The interaction of the BlackChili rubber compound, specially adapted for the road bike tyre, with the new tyre construction has a positive effect on rolling resistance, cornering grip and mileage. Two separate carcass layers of TPI each are used, one of which is unlaid around the bead to over the sidewall. This increases puncture protection, eliminates the need for another sealing rubber layer - which reduces tyre weight. This makes the Grand Prix S TR the new standard for tubeless-ready technology in the road bike portfolio of the caoutchouc specialists from Germany. A revised bead reliably seals the tyre and provides a good fit on both hooked and hookless rims. For the first installation, Continental recommends to use at least 30 ml of Conti RevoSealant prod. Rotate the tyre or wheel afterwards to distribute the sealant all around. Then inflate the tyre to the maximum recommended pressure. You should check the pressure at regular intervals as well as before your first ride and inflate the tyre if necessary. Combining both always requires a compromise.

The Continental Grand Prix is the successor of the hugely popular Grand Prix series that has dominated the high-end road bike tire market for the last 10 years. The GP became this popular because it was a true all-round tire that provided good enough grip, good durability, and good puncture resistance while still providing a very low rolling resistance. Continental also added a new tread pattern which they call "Lazer Grip" and is supposed to improve cornering performance. Also new is the "Active Comfort" technology which according to Continental "absorbs vibrations and smoothens your ride". I'm not sure if the Lazer Grip and Active Comfort technology really result in any large differences, as I'm generally quite doubtful over these kinds of marketing claims. What I get excited about is the addition of an even bigger sized version. The GP is now available in 23, 25, 28, and 32 mm wide versions. I bet the will become very popular as well as I know a certain crowd is looking for a tire like that. If you're interested in how the 23, 25, 28, and 32 mm Grand Prix compare to each other, you can read our Grand Prix 23, 25, 28, 32 Comparison special article. Also exciting is Continental finally entered the tubeless road bike tire market with a tubeless version of the GP which they conveniently named the Grand Prix TL read review.

In fact, I'd go as far to say that you could race on these tyres during the summer and train on them in the winter. In this instance, then, what Continental has given with one hand it may have taken away with the other. Rolling resistance has gone even lower again and is now close to the Grand Prix TT of the previous generation while providing much better tread-thickness and puncture resistance. Continental has achieved this without large increases in weight or rolling resistance or to the detriment of ride quality, making the Grand Prix AS TR a great option for winter riding. The addition of the is also something we like, but beware that Continental made the Grand Prix series slightly smaller to compensate for the wider rims we use these days.
