From America and Finland to France and Italy, regions across the globe contributed greatly to the realm of comedy cinema.
At the same time, this year has seen Hollywood deliver more inventive and memorable mid-budget studio comedies than it has in quite a while. Nothing about it, including its last-minute rom-com twists, should work. Sometimes, all it takes for a comedy to work is the nerve to really go there. Its premise sets it up to deliver more than a few dramatic moments, and The Holdovers does exactly that, but the emotional darkness of its story never overwhelms it. The best comedies of were, like they so often are, hiding inside of other genres. And some of it is simply because silliness is back on the rise, in all corners. The best comedies of encompassed wry indies, full-frontally bawdy studio films, animated hybrids featuring giggling ninja turtles, and Ken. These movies tackle queerness, coming-of-age and, again, a surprising amount of business transactions. But You Hurt My Feelings is also written and directed by Nicole Holofcener, an expert in revealing the invisible tensions lurking behind social and relationship niceties. So are we actually as good at our jobs and passions! The answer probably lies somewhere in between, but Holofcener is clear-eyed enough to give the latter a surprisingly full consideration. An average middle-class husband and father in Brockton, Massachusetts, Gill spent a lot of his free time either running at the local high school track, or in his basement researching potential stocks to invest his relatively small personal savings into. Things got interesting when he got fixated on the potential of GameStop stock mostly for how it was being ignored by stockbrokers and hedge funds. The ensemble is also extremely well cast with comedians and character actors who are adept in conveying a lot of heavy stock market exposition in grounded, witty and absorbing ways. And Dumb Money makes it clear that this applies not just to the stock market but to the pandemic too, as every frontline worker had to follow the rules and stay on the job, while the rich bent the rules to make money at their expense. But we were pleasantly surprised; my kids were in stitches at several spots, while I was quite amused. Leo proved to be a perfect, lighthearted watch on a rainy evening that left us with a feeling of bonhomie before switching off the lights for the night. Will it help my children discover the comedic antics of the former SNL star? Leo is 74 years old, and has shared the same glass tank with Squirtle the Turtle Bill Burr for more than seven decades.

Entertaining global audiences from every corner of the world, the comedy genre has always been a beloved one; when it comes to the film industry, it is no exception. Various aspects of being a human being on planet Earth have been a struggle these past few years, to put it mildly. Good ol' fashioned escapism has always been a tried-and-true way of dealing with our real-life problems, and that's as true now as it's ever been. Movies in particular seem to be an especially effective source of comfort for people of late, with comedies being among the best genres for turning a bad day around or making a good day even better — that is to say, funnier. The best comedies of the year so far also run the gamut from big-budget studio fare to small indie flicks, encompassing both Hollywood and international productions.

Directed By: Yorgos Lanthimos. Watch on Netflix. The very best films from the country are windows into the nation's history, traditions, and its filmmakers' artistic brilliance. While Gerwig's movie is far from being a political, feminist manifesto, it has certainly stirred hilarious reactions to how it addresses the patriarchy — something that a big blockbuster hasn't done before, or at least not so straightforwardly. Where many recent examples of this genre fall short is in dodging this degree of specificity, scared to ground an audience in the monotony of the everyday. R min Comedy, Romance. The film follows a struggling soccer coach who tries to revive his career in—where else? Their characters break the fourth wall during dialogue attributions, adding a unique essence to an overall hilarious project from the acclaimed auteur in Anderson. Based on the open-ended novel of the same name by Alasdair Gray , Poor Things blends the comedy, drama, fantasy, and science fiction genres and delivers a never-seen-before narrative heightened by Stone's impeccable efforts. The lifelong friends are portrayed by Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda , Rita Moreno, and Sally Field, all comedic legends, and they are effortless in this laugh-out-loud sports comedy. They cross paths with an unhinged drug dealer along the way. Directed By: Greta Gerwig. A decent plot is greatly elevated by catchy musical numbers with great choreography, bold humor, and a vibrant, colorful aesthetic. Clear your history.
Oof, these last few years have been a doozy and we could all probably use some serious belly laughs right now.
Screenwriters Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern crafted a solid plot in 80 for Brady , and it features hilarious dialogue to boot. All in all, Asteroid City is a truly layered movie about the journey of self-discovery and the quest for the meaning of life. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is swinging for the fences with its story and voice performances to ambitiously, quantifiably shake up the artistic rut that theatrical computer animation has been stuck in for the last two decades. With a very humane premise and interesting characters, The Holdovers serves as a comedy as it does as a drama, with an inspirational story at its heart and three fantastic acting performances. But above everything, it was damn funny, especially Gosling as the Ken of All Kens, the anatomically incorrect himbo who tries to bring the patriarchy to Barbieland and ends up stealing the movie — just like a typical man.
