Chanticleer and the fox disney
Did you ever wonder why the Disney Studios made an all-animal version of the legend of Robin Hood with such appealing character designs or where some of the Audio-Animatronics figures like the fancy dressed singing chickens in the America Sings attraction that were later used in Chanticleer and the fox disney Mountain originated? They all came from a proposed animated feature film that would have recounted the story of two well-known French characters that Walt obtained decades earlier. In the s, Walt was interested in two French properties, Reynard the Fox and Chanticleerchanticleer and the fox disney, but both presented story challenges because of generally unsympathetic main characters. Chanticleer was a play by Edmond Rostand who also wrote Cyrano de Bergerac and it was meant to be a satirical commentary on society using talking animals as surrogates.
Although it was in development at the Disney studio from the '40s up until the mid-'60s, it never saw completion. Set on a Parisian farm in the late s, much like the play, Chanticleer was to have been the story of a vain rooster whose leadership the other barnyard residents had accepted because they all truly believed his crowing was what brought the sun up each morning. Although, Chanticleer's power went to his head and he began acting bossy and demanding toward the animals, especially the hens who were made to lay copious amounts of eggs. Elsewhere, ruthless band of "Night Creatures" e. Under the guise of a traveling circus, they came to the farm and performed for the animals, causing them to want Reynard to lead them instead because unlike Chanticleer, he was allowing them to have fun. Elsewhere, a beautiful Pheasant who was new on the farm had constantly been trying to get Chanticleer to notice her, but all her attempts had failed. So Reynard, hoping that her beauty would distract Chanticleer so that the rooster couldn't ruin his plan, offered to give her a makeover.

Chanticleer was going to be a Disney animated movie based on Edmond Rostand's play Chantecler. It was in development from the s up until the mid s and never saw completion. Though the film was cancelled, its character designs later inspired the Disney animated film Robin Hood as well as the animatronics for defunct America Sings attraction in Disneyland. The film takes place on a Parisian farm in the late s, much like the play. Chanticleer is a vain rooster who has all the animals believe that his crowing is what brings up the sun each morning. He later realizes his arrogance and makes amends to find the strength to defeat his enemies. In , Walt Disney learned about the Chanticleer story and told story men, Ted Sears and Al Perkins to see what ideas they could get from the material, but they had trouble making the rooster a sympathetic character. Walt combined the project with another project going under the title Reynard the Fox , inspired by a French folktale. This gave Walt the idea to create an opposing villain character that would help boost sympathy on the rooster. Multiple films were already in development, so the project was put on hold for the majority of World War II. In the s, work was finished on the animated film Dalmatians. Marc Davis and Ken Anderson decided to collaborate on a film inspired by the growing popularity of Broadway musicals. Going down to the Animation Archive Library, they both came across the Chanticleer concept art and liked what they saw. Hearing of this news, Walt urged the duo to scrap all work done on the project and start fresh, hoping that they could get it done this way.

Not much is known of Chaucer's early life and education, other than he learned to read French, Latin, and Italian. His experiences as a civil servant and diplomat are said to have developed his fascination with people and his knowledge of English life. He returned to England after the Treaty of Bretigny when the King paid his ransom. In he married Philippa Roet, one of Queen Philippa's ladies, who gave him two sons and two daughters. Chaucer remained in royal service traveling to Flanders, Italy, and Spain. These travels would all have a great influence on his work. His early writing was influenced by the French tradition of courtly love poetry, and his later work by the Italians, especially Dante, Boccaccio, and Petrarch.

Published by Crowell in , it was the recipient of the Caldecott Medal for illustration in The book had its beginnings in Cooney's delight in the colorful plumage of some exotic chickens she happened to see in the late afternoon October sunlight. There followed a period of research on medieval times. As with much of her illustration for the previous twenty years, Cooney used a scratchboard technique. As each additional color cost money, Cooney was granted five colors, at least for half the pages, by Crowell. Some pages would be in two colors, red and black, while some double spreads would be split, ideally so that the discrepancy would not be noticed or, better, that the picture would benefit.
