In the film, struggling journalist Eddie gains superpowers after becoming the host of an alien symbiote , Venom, whose species plans to invade Earth. After Venom's appearance in Spider-Man 3 , Sony attempted to develop a spin-off film based on the character but it did not move forward due to issues with Sony's ongoing Spider-Man franchise. In March , work began on a new version that would start a new shared universe featuring the non-Spider-Man Marvel characters that the studio possessed film rights to. Marcel subsequently joined to rewrite the script. The film was primarily inspired by the comic book miniseries Venom: Lethal Protector and the story arc " Planet of the Symbiotes " Despite being negatively received by critics, Hardy's performance and the character's relationship with Venom was praised. While exploring space for new habitable worlds, a probe belonging to the bio-engineering corporation Life Foundation discovers a comet covered in symbiotic lifeforms. The probe returns to Earth with four samples, but one escapes and causes the ship to crash in Malaysia. The Life Foundation recovers the other three and transports them to their research facility in San Francisco , where they discover that the symbiotes cannot survive without oxygen-breathing hosts, which often fatally reject the symbiosis. Consequently, Anne ends her relationship with Eddie. Six months later, Drake's symbiosis trials are closer to success, although one of his symbiotes dies due to carelessness.

In the film, Eddie and the alien symbiote Venom must face serial killer Cletus Kasady Harrelson after he becomes the host of an offshoot of Venom named Carnage. Venom was intended by Sony to be the start of a new shared universe, and plans for a sequel began during production on the first film. Harrelson was cast to make a brief appearance as Cletus at the end of Venom , with the intention of him becoming the villain Carnage in the sequel. Official work on the sequel began in January , with Hardy and Harrelson confirmed to return along with Marcel as writer. Serkis was hired as director that August, partly due to his experience working with CGI and motion capture technology , which was an important part of portraying Venom and Carnage in the film.

In both movies, reporter Eddie Brock hears the alien Venom's voice in his head. The bickering couple dynamic of Brock and his living alien skin-suit is a franchise mainstay, and a source of the quippy humor modern audiences have come to expect from superhero movies.
