Allow them to dry for several minutes, and place them back into the device. These errors may appear due to a communication breakdown between the printer and the chip on the cartridge. Still, there is a simple fix. If you get such an HP printer cartridge problem, first, reset the printer to recover from any errors or failures. Then, with the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer. Unplug the power cord from the power source and wait 60 seconds. Finally, turn on the printer to complete the reset. Then turn off the printer and remove all cartridges. Take a lint-free cloth and dump it in distilled water.

If the Defective Cartridge error disappears, the problem probably lies with the toner cartridge.

Hi I have a HP Envy printer. Since I installed new cartridges from HP instant ink I constantly get an error message saying incompatible cartridge. At first I was able to get around it by removing the cartridge and reinstalling it. It would print 1 page before the error showed again. I have followed all the recommended steps, cleaned contacts, updated firmware etc, etc several times but now the error shows constantly and I cant print at all. I have noticed though that the ink cartridge number is different that what I used to use. Are they the wrong cartridges for my printer?
