My approach to the books I process in my professional life is quite different than my approach to the books I savor in my personal life. The former requires the ruthlessly efficient extraction of key ideas and citations, while the latter unfolds as a slower, more romantic endeavor. The key to my system is the pencil mark in the page corner. This allows me later to quickly leaf through a book and immediately identify the small but crucial subset of pages that contain passages that relate to whatever project I happen to be working on. It will take me less than 10 minutes to review in totality the elements of this treatise that are potentially relevant.

This is the part everyone should read. Deep work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship. He calls the corporate environment as a "hyperactive hive mind" which keeps switching from one task to another briskly. I'm not the target audience for this book -- I don't work in an office and am not a "knowledge worker" as it seems to be defined -- but I found it interesting as the latest iteration of Cal Newport's argument about the value of focused attention. My problem was more so towards the attitude. Videos About This Author. In the end, what sours me on this book is that he never questions that it's the ceaseless expectations put upon knowledge workers in the name of productivity and profit that are the actual problems, and trading in emails for Trello boards and the like is largely a meaningless difference. Unfortunately, in his book "So Good They Can't Ignore You," Newport frames his advice in a disingenuous context -- he perhaps willfully misinterprets what I suspect a large number of people including Steve Jobs really meant when they use the phrase "follow your passion.
One of the most valuable skills in our economy is becoming increasingly rare. If you master this skill, you'll achieve extraordinary results.
The first was his brief but compelling account of the rise of the "follow your passion" ethos, which drew on Google Ngrams and pointed to the meteoric success of the book, What Colour Is Your Parachute? However, the best that Mr. Eventually you will gain a passion in what you do well. I'm willing to be ruthless in this pursuit. It was a frustrating read because the argument he put forward is provocative, counterintuitive and true, yet the evidence and overall argument was thin and wanting. I don't think this is necessarily a contradiction, but Cal doesn't seem to be very clear about explaining that missions are emergent interests that arise from one's collected experiences and opportunities as a craftsman.
