The Bureau of Meteorology has been accused of fudging its temperature data records. It's a very serious accusation - and it's untrue, write Andy Pitman and Lisa Alexander. If true, this would be very serious because these data sets underpin major climate research projects, including deducing how much Australia is warming. Data homogenisation techniques are used to varying degrees by many national weather agencies and climate researchers around the world. Although the World Meteorological Organization has guidelines for data homogenisation , the methods used vary from country to country, and in some cases no data homogenisation is applied. Homogenisation can be necessary for a range of reasons: sometimes stations move, instruments or reporting practices change, or surrounding trees or buildings at a site are altered. Changes can be sudden or gradual. If left uncorrected, these artifacts could leave the data appearing to show spurious warming or cooling trends. These data are then used to monitor climate variability and change in Australia, to provide input for the State of the Climate reports, and for other purposes too.

The majority of Australia's weather radars are operated by the Bureau of Meteorology BoM , an executive agency of the Australian Government. The radar network is continually being upgraded with new technology such as doppler and dual polarisation to provide better now-casting. Doppler weather radars are able to detect the movement of precipitation, making it very useful in detecting damaging winds associated with precipitation, [1] and determining if a thunderstorm has a rotating updraft , a key indicator of the presence of the most dangerous type of thunderstorm, a supercell.
It mighnt seem like much but its a huge step backwards to what it was. It needs to be a seperate window like it used to be.
