In many ways what transpired on March 6, was the worst fears of the New South Wales Rugby League powerbrokers realised right before their very eyes. For decades debate had raged over the strength of the Brisbane competition in comparison to the richer NSWRL and here was a team — albeit bursting with Origin representatives — coming together and in their first game making the defending premiers look second-rate. The Broncos took a lead into the halftime break and despite concerns about physically being up to the standard of established clubs in the NSWRL ran riot in the second half. On their way to the title the Sea Eagles had conceded more than 30 points in a game just once; the Broncos piled on 30 in the second half alone. Everyone associated with the Broncos was doing backflips after their spectacular debut showing, everyone that is except one man.

They cruised through to the final of the Tooheys Challenge Cup for the fifth time, but amazingly were pipped by the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the decider.
