The admission of the Broncos caused great division among the Brisbane rugby league fanbase, many of whom were bitter that their beloved BRL competition had been plundered of its best players for this new franchise to take hold. When they ran out as Broncos for the first time on March 6, — just nine months later — there were only 17, fans there to greet them. In comparison, more than 26, packed into the Newcastle International Sports Centre to see the Knights play their first game that same weekend. The quartet had already poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into establishing their new club and could not afford to keep subsidising their ongoing existence. Terry Matterson was the starting lock for that maiden Broncos game and as one of only three Sydney imports quickly understood that this was not a city completely united behind their latest sporting team. In many ways what transpired on March 6, was the worst fears of the New South Wales Rugby League powerbrokers realised right before their very eyes. For decades debate had raged over the strength of the Brisbane competition in comparison to the richer NSWRL and here was a team — albeit bursting with Origin representatives — coming together and in their first game making the defending premiers look second-rate. The Broncos took a lead into the halftime break and despite concerns about physically being up to the standard of established clubs in the NSWRL ran riot in the second half. On their way to the title the Sea Eagles had conceded more than 30 points in a game just once; the Broncos piled on 30 in the second half alone. Everyone associated with the Broncos was doing backflips after their spectacular debut showing, everyone that is except one man.

They cruised through to the final of the Tooheys Challenge Cup for the fifth time, but amazingly were pipped by the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the decider. Although the Broncos won their first six games in their inaugural season, a midseason slump cost the club a debut finals appearance, finishing the season in seventh position, broncos first game 1988.

The history of the Brisbane Broncos Rugby League Football Club stretches back from their inception in the mids to the present day. They were introduced to the NSWRL 's Winfield Cup premiership in , taking the competition by storm in winning their first six games. Round 8 saw Brisbane produce the biggest comeback in the club's history when they came from 18—0 down at halftime to win 30—28 over the Canberra Raiders.
