We are a world-leading independent research organisation providing objective, expert geoscientific data, information and knowledge. A special webinar focusing on our our geomagnetism research, including how we measure the magnetic field, everyday applications and mitigating the threats of space weather. BGS has delivered its first major update of the national carbon dioxide storage database, CO2 Stored. BGS scientists are studying the diets of ancient British wolves and how they adapted to changing environments. Fractured rock along faults affects sediment movement on slopes with implications for the design of infrastructure. The British Geological Survey BGS is a partly publicly funded body which aims to advance geoscientific knowledge of the United Kingdom landmass and its continental shelf by means of systematic surveying, monitoring and research. Its other centres are located in Edinburgh , Wallingford , Cardiff and London. This was the world's first national geological survey. It remained a branch of the Ordnance Survey for many years. From the s, the survey in Scotland operated under the identity of the Geological Survey of Scotland. The BGS advises the British government on all aspects of geoscience, as well as providing impartial advice on geological matters to the public, academics and industry. BGS is a component body of UK Research and Innovation which "works in partnership with universities, research organisations, businesses, charities, and government to create the best possible environment for research and innovation to flourish". The core outputs of the BGS include geological, geophysical , geochemical and hydrogeological maps , descriptions and related digital databases. Scientists at the BGS produced the first comprehensive map of African groundwater reserves. The current five-year strategy identifies four key priorities for the BGS: 'maps and models for the 21st century; a more secure energy transition; improved water security; and living with geological hazards'. Delivering authoritative, impartial and independent up-to-date data, information and analysis on critical minerals that are essential to the UK economy. The UK Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre CMIC supports the UK in securing adequate, timely and sustainable supplies of the minerals and metals it requires to transition its economy in the coming decades to net-zero emissions. With a zero-net emissions target by , the UK has set a world-leading ambition to decarbonise its industries and supply chains. This notably encompasses the automotive industry transition to battery electric vehicle and hydrogen fuel cells, deployment of large offshore wind turbines and maintenance, decarbonising energy-intensive industry using hydrogen, and implementing a more circular economy. Building these facilities and technologies will require large amounts of critical raw materials. The UK currently imports most of its minerals and metals through complex and dynamic supply chains. CMIC will help the government and industry to understand the future critical mineral demands and supply chain vulnerabilities. Our aim is to guide decision-making by government and industry to mitigate risks to supply security, helping to deliver economic prosperity and create opportunities for UK businesses in critical mineral supply chains, domestically and internationally. The UK plans to establish a hydrogen economy to meet its target of producing green hydrogen energy by
