By Peter Travers. Go for broke. If GoodFellas and Traffic are the class bookends of the last decade in drug cinema, Blow scorches the screen with a badass bravado all its own. Smart, sexy, funny and dangerous, this high-wire act is a movie and a half. For starters, it showcases talents working at the top of their games. Although Depp has little range, he's acceptable in the lead - a source of calm and emotional steadiness, which contrasts the nervousness and paranoia of his associates. The first half of Blow is a shallow but lively fun ride; the audience gets a contact high. But when George's fortunes start to go from bad to worse, so does the movie. This is one of the few drug movies where you actually feel a little sorry for the drug-dealing coke-infested lead character. Johnny Depp gives a spellbindingly naturalistic performance that puts a sympathetic face on a powerfully individualistic man unable to shake a world of crime that brought him immense riches and eventually cost him everything he caredabout. Does the movie make us care? Not really, which is the movie's basic problem. A GoodFellas knockoff down to every culpable detail - only this time with Ray Liotta playing the hardworking sap of a dad - this stars Johnny Depp in a blond wig that makes him look like a permanently hungover Francis Rossi lookalike in a Quo tribute band. He plays George Jung, the real-life character who introduced cocaine to America in the s and s as the drug of choice for the moneyed classes. For very long stretches, Depp does a growly-nasal GoodFellas-style "we-had-it-great-it-was-so-sweet" voiceover during sequences showing George and his companeros gloating over their cash and their stash.
