Bird de la Coeur Architects is a boutique firm based in South Melbourne and specialising in multi-residential buildings — ranging from high-end apartments for the private sector to social housing for government organisations and high-end aged care housing — and one-off houses. Founded in by Neil de la Coeur and Vanessa Bird, Bird de la Coeur has grown from a three-person operation to a practice with a portfolio of completed multi-storey buildings across Australia. However, our studio-based practice has remained the same. The compelling idea for each project stems from our conversations with clients. Asking questions and listening continue to be basic architectural devices. What our clients say Bird de la Coeur has a large group of repeat clients. They say we provide them with a personal and a holistic service. They say we are organised and drive the program. We are big enough to provide a quality, knowledge-based service, yet small enough to provide a streamlined personal service. For want of a better term, we call that a boutique service.

The McBride House is sited around two major trees, one of which is a striking park-scale blue gum. This tree forms a fulcrum around which the house is organised. Solar orientation and the existing trees gave rise to a flipped site layout. Along with the pool, the studio creates an entry journey. Access to the front door is via an enclosed path formed by the studio, past the pool and out onto a deck where the full view of the blue gum and the main house is revealed at the back of the site. Passive heating and cooling design strategies are assisted by a large array of solar panels. The project was awarded a Timber Design Award in The prominent use of timber at McBride House resonates with the surrounding natural landscape.

Text description provided by the architects. It responds to its heritage neighbors with an innovative Flex Brick second-skin facade over a traditional brickwork base. The design is drawn from careful analysis of the brick patterning on the former s South Yarra Post Office opposite, coupled with the need to protect the west facade from heat load, while maintaining views.
