When Plutarch placed in noble array for the contemplation of ages to come his images of heroes and sages, or when Dr Johnson drew that gallery of poets, so many of whom only survive in his portraiture, the writers must have been conscious how little of the real men lay behind those strong or graceful representations, how much that was even faithfully recorded may convey a false impression, how much was inevitably omitted which might contradict every deduction and alter every estimate. The Australian Dictionary of Biography is Australia's pre-eminent dictionary of national biography. The subjects come from all walks of life — from prime ministers, governors-general and premiers, generals and bishops, artists, actors and authors, engineers and schoolteachers, to prostitutes, thieves and murderers — providing a cross-section of Australian society. The General Editor then commissions the entries. Section editors , drawn from each of the Working Parties, and Editorial Fellows , who are eminent academic historians, read and review all entries. Over 4, authors, not all of them academics, have written entries for the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Chosen by the Queensland Working Party, and following the tradition that ADB working parties take it in turn to choose the artwork, the painting 'suggests a gallery of timeless individuals'. It captures, too, the diversity of subjects in the volume; the people considered to be significant to Australian history. Our long-serving publisher, Melbourne University Press, has once again produced a publication of outstanding quality. The ADB is a national collaborative project, the largest and longest-running of its kind in the social sciences and humanities in Australia. The ADB 's first General Editor, Douglas Pike, emphasised this in , in the preface to volume 1, stating that the project is an 'all-Australia, Commonwealth-wide venture based on consultation and co-operation'. Over authors, together with the members of between seven and nine working parties, national committees and editorial boards, have given freely of their time over the years to the project. The working parties represent Australians geographically by state and thematically armed services and Commonwealth. Each state is allocated a quota of articles based on its population.
