Misty has chewed Ash out on countless occasions, sometimes with good reason. But there have been times when Misty has been a little too hard on Ash. He is, after all, ash and misty, only 10 years old. This is something Misty didn't always seem to keep in mind.

Ash and Misty met in the first episode of the anime, when Misty fished Ash and Pikachu out of a river. The wild chase inevitably ended with Ash and Pikachu completely destroying her bike, and as a result, Misty made it her mission to track him down and get him to pay her back. However, after tagging along with Ash for a period of time, Misty grew attached to him, eventually caring about him enough to call him her best friend and even develop an often hidden crush on him. The bike was eventually forgotten completely, and after all the adventures they experienced on their journey together, the two consider each other best friends to this day. During their time traveling together, others often referred to Ash and Misty as though they were a couple, which sparked embarrassed blushes and denial from both of them almost every single time, without fail. Ash and Misty both had a habit of getting jealous when a potential suitor showed interest in the other.

Ash and Misty especially stood out for them. Being roughly the same age and traveling together for so long, TV viewers couldn't help but wonder if there was something more to the pair. Years of cartoons beforehand trained them to think the main boy and girl get together in the end. Would the same happen with Ash and Misty? The two clearly had a strong relationship, but what kind of relationship was it? Did they really have romantic feelings toward one another, or was it just a platonic friendship? Also Ash keeps almost drowning around her. Because whatever the original plans for the two were, they almost certainly changed. While Ash and Misty remain a popular pairing, especially among older fans who started with the original series, the truth is that their relationship had a lot less romantic hints in Japanese. That's not to say that Ash and Misty's potential romance was entirely a creation of the dub, of course. Despite their constant bickering, the two were shown to care deeply about each other and repeatedly became flustered at the notion of being a couple. In the end, however, the romantic relationship between Misty and Ash was put to an end when Pokemon was renewed for additional seasons. This decision resulted in Misty finally getting her fixed bike, removing her reason to continue traveling with Ash in the process. Instead of trying to depict the complications of a long-distance relationship, the producers opted to drop the romance between Ash and Misty in favor of a simple yet strong friendship. The series occurred in the wondrous Kanto and Johto regions of the first two generations. Iconic characters like the Kanto gym leaders , Professor Oak, and Blue Gary Oak were directly taken from the games and given new life in the show. Unfortunately, this decision meant sidelining Misty and any potential romance developed between her and Ash. This change could also rekindle the long-dormant spark between Ash and Misty if the producers wish it so.
